{"id":3221,"date":"2023-06-16T18:11:35","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T23:11:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsp.clinic\/?p=3221"},"modified":"2024-01-29T11:46:38","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T17:46:38","slug":"nsp-clinic-explica-que-es-un-electroencefalograma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsp.clinic\/en\/nsp-clinic-explica-que-es-un-electroencefalograma\/","title":{"rendered":"NSP Clinic explains: What is an electroencephalogram?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a brain functional test that allows us to detect the electrical activity of the cerebral cortex and, therefore, enables us to detect some anomalies in its functioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3222 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nsp.clinic\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/INM_1406.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It consists of collecting, using surface electrodes (sensors), the electrical activity of the cerebral cortex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The placement of electrodes on the scalp is done according to a system known as 10-20, so called because the electrodes are spaced between 10% and 20% of the total distance between recognizable points on the skull.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These key points, from which the measurements are made, are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nasion indentation between forehead and nose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Inion; occipital protuberance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preauricular point; in front of the tragus of each ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, caps that have 19 electrodes incorporated can be used, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is placed directly on the patient&#039;s head. The electrodes are joined in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connector and this, in turn, connects with the EEG head (place where the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electrical activity of each electrode). From here the signal is sent to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amplifiers of the central EEG apparatus for transcription.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the duration of the study the patient will only feel the presence of electrodes placed directly on the scalp, or in a special cap for the purpose of holding the electrode, but it is not painful at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3223 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nsp.clinic\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/INM_1401.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indications:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epilepsy represents the main neurological disorder in which it is strictly necessary to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">order an EEG <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brain tumors, or other masses that occupy intracranial space, can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detected and targeted through the EEG, through careful study of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several layouts obtained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In head trauma, and in frequent meningoencephalic infections in children, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EEG is a good index of neuronal functioning, and serves to evaluate the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment effectiveness and prognosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summary, its greatest indication is in epilepsy; space-occupying injuries <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intracranial; brain injuries and infections and in some psychiatric syndromes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specific.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contraindications:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Absolute: since it is a non-invasive test, there are no absolute contraindications <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for its realization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We have this study in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsp.clinic\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neuro Spine &amp; Pain Clinic<\/a>, which is carried out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsp.clinic\/en\/team\/ing-carlos-alberto-consejo-foglia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eng.
