In this winter season our body is more susceptible to respiratory tract infections, there are multiple theories as to why infections increase during this season, one of them is that due to the cold, we tend to be more in closed places which are poorly ventilated making us susceptible to respiratory infections.

The truth is that if we have a healthy immune system, even if we are close to someone with a respiratory infection caused by a virus or bacteria, it is unlikely that they will infect us, which is why I want to share with you some recommendations to take care of ourselves during this cold season.

1. Try to eat a healthy and balanced diet. We know that these cold seasons are accompanied by multiple celebrations, in which alcohol intake increases in some people, more sugary foods, more refined carbohydrates, more refined oils, more processed foods and more dairy products, which can lead us to a pro-inflammatory state that can make us susceptible to infections.

My recommendation is to be conscious and try to maintain a balance, try to have a diet accompanied by vegetables most of the days, that our three meals include vegetables to achieve a good intake of fiber which will help us maintain a balanced microbiota and a glycemic balance.

Try to consume enough protein in your daily diet, if possible consume it in 2 or 3 of your meals, our immune system needs protein to be able to produce the cells necessary to defend us from aggressive agents.

2. Get a general check-up with labs to see how your body is doing in general. This will give you tools so that if you are experiencing inflammation that manifests itself biochemically, you can start from there.

It is important to keep our metabolic markers such as glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, and glycosylated hemoglobin within recommended ranges because when we have a metabolic imbalance we enter a pro-inflammatory state that causes our immune system to be inflamed and the immune system would be too busy with inflammation that it could not help us if a foreign body such as a virus or bacteria enters.

There is a test called blood count that can help us check the state of our immune system because it measures some of the cells that make up the immune system, such as lymphocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, among others.

If we find any metabolic imbalance in laboratory tests, it is important to work on it with diet, exercise and supplementation to help our immune system.

3. There are supplements that can help you take care of your immune system, although before supplementing it would be recommended that you have laboratory tests done to check the levels of some nutrients, but in general there are vitamins and minerals that you could supplement to support your immune system.

Vitamin D plays an important role in the immune system and its deficiency is very common today because sun exposure has been minimized. I recommend checking values and in case of deficiency, supplementing since vitamin D plays an important role in the immune system.

Zinc is an essential micronutrient that helps stabilize the immune barriers of the skin and mucous membranes, helps the production of antibodies to fight any external agent such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites that want to infect us, I recommend supplementing during this cold season to strengthen our immune system.

Vitamin C helps us regulate our immune system, it favors the attack on microbes that want to attack our body, it has been seen that vitamin C deficiency makes us more susceptible to infections. Vitamin C has multiple functions in the body, among them is the production of cortisol, cortisol allows us to wake up but it is also a hormone that increases when we are stressed, it is one of the reasons why when we go through periods of stress many people get sick, because it increases the production of cortisol and depletes the reserves of vitamin C.

4. Take care of your microbiota, a large part of the immune system is found in our digestive system, our microbiota largely regulates our immune system, there are some bacteria that are considered good bacteria such as those of the lactobacillus, bifidobacteria, akkermansia family that have an important role in many processes of our body, since they produce substances such as short-chain fatty acids like butyrate which is the main food for the cells of our colon which are the colonocytes, they also produce mucus that prevents bacteria and toxins from passing from our intestine to our bloodstream which helps prevent us from getting sick.

To take care of our microbiota, it is important to consume plenty of fiber in our meals, avoid alcohol, moderate the amount of sugar we consume, avoid the amount of processed foods, cook more at home because this way we take care of the ingredients we use as well as the hygiene of our food.

5. Use more herbs and spices. There are many herbs that have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties that can help counteract this inflammatory disease in this time of year. Cinnamon, ginger, cloves, oregano, cardamom, turmeric, thyme, sage, and mint are some of the herbs with antimicrobial properties that can help you, in addition to strengthening your immune system, fight infections if you already have them.

An excellent option to consume these herbs is to add them as condiments to your meals or consume them in teas and infusions.

These are just some tips on how to take care of your immune system, but if you want to learn how to take care of your body and your health, I invite you to Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic where we can give you a general checkup and teach you how to take care of yourself.

Acupuncture, an ancient practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used for more than two millennia to treat various physical and emotional conditions. In the case of the spine, acupuncture stands out as a tool that can help relieve musculoskeletal pain, improve mobility and regulate internal functions related to organs and emotions.

Although the spine is generally perceived as a physical support structure, in TCM it has a deeper meaning, connecting the central nervous system, emotions and the vital energy (Qi) that flows through the body.

The Column: More than a Support Pillar

In TCM, the spine is considered a crucial axis that influences both physical and emotional well-being. Among other examples, on either side of the spine, along the Bladder meridian, are the Shu points, which are directly related to the internal organs and their functions.

These points, located approximately 1.5 cun (traditional Chinese measure) lateral to the midline of the spine, when stimulated, play a dual role:

– They relieve physical ailments such as muscle tension and chronic pain.

– They regulate the functions of internal organs, promoting emotional and physiological health.

There are 12 Shu points along the sides of the spine, each related to specific organs. Below are 3 examples of these points and some of their functions:

Xin Shu (BL-15)This point helps stabilize emotions such as anxiety and regulates the heart rate. In addition, when stimulated, it relieves muscle pain in the upper back, especially in the interscapular region.

– Gan Shu (BL-18), liver point, located at the level of the ninth thoracic vertebra (T9), It is useful for treating physical tensions associated with stress and emotions such as anger. It also helps to release stiffness in the lumbar and thoracic region, improving flexibility and reducing joint stiffness.

– Fei Shu (BL-13), lung point, located at the level of the third thoracic vertebra (T3). It improves breathing, strengthens the lungs and helps process emotions such as sadness. In the musculoskeletal aspect, it is used to relieve tension in the intercostal muscles and improve thoracic expansion.

These Shu points are a clear example of how acupuncture can address both the physical and emotional, energetic and functional aspects of well-being, providing a comprehensive approach to the health of the spine, internal organs and the body as a whole.

Benefits of Acupuncture in Spine Care

Acupuncture is an effective tool not only for treating but also for accompanying other treatments aimed at spinal health. Its impact is not only limited to pain relief, but also addresses underlying causes that can affect overall well-being. Some of its key benefits in this process include:

1. Regulation of the autonomic nervous system

Acupuncture helps activate the parasympathetic system, which promotes a state of relaxation and reduces the stress response. This is especially helpful in managing chronic pain.

2. Improves blood and lymphatic circulation

By stimulating key points, blood flow to the affected tissues is improved, promoting injury recovery and reducing inflammation.

3. Emotional and hormonal balance

Acupuncture modulates the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which helps relieve anxiety, depression and emotional stress that can aggravate physical pain.

Why Choose Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a versatile tool that not only treats chronic pain or spinal-related problems, but is also an excellent option for maintaining and enhancing overall well-being. There is no need to wait for a problem to arise to benefit from this practice; its preventative approach strengthens the body, balances emotions and promotes optimal health.

However, if pain or discomfort has already appeared, acupuncture is an equally effective method of healing. Thanks to its ability to activate the body's natural recovery processes and balance internal systems, its results are usually surprising, providing significant relief and improving the quality of life of those who receive it.

Whether used as a complement to other treatments or as part of a comprehensive care routine, acupuncture offers tangible benefits for both those seeking prevention and those seeking healing.

If you want to know more about how acupuncture can help you, please do not hesitate to contact us. This ancient practice can make the difference between being well and feeling your best.

At NSP Clinic, Neuropsychology is an integral part of our specialized services in brain and mind care. Our neuropsychologist is dedicated to assessing and treating neurological and cognitive disorders, as well as helping our patients reach their full cognitive and functional potential.

Our Neuropsychology services at NSP Clinic include:

Neuropsychological Evaluation: We conduct detailed assessments to evaluate our patients' cognitive functioning, including areas such as memory, attention, language, visuospatial skills, executive functions, personality changes associated with neurological disorders, and other mental functions. We use a variety of standardized tests and assessment tools to gain a complete understanding of each patient's neuropsychological profile.

Diagnosis and treatment of neuropsychological disorders: Our neuropsychologist is trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of neuropsychological disorders, including neurodevelopmental disorders, traumatic brain injuries, strokes, neurodegenerative diseases, learning disorders, brain tumors, among others.

Some of the conditions a neuropsychologist can address include:

Cognitive decline: Cognitive impairment is an area of great importance in neuropsychology, as it refers to changes in higher mental functions, such as memory, attention, language, perception, reasoning ability, problem solving and emotional regulation, that are significantly less than expected for a person's age and that interfere with their daily functioning.

There are a variety of causes of cognitive decline, which may include neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis; as well as acquired neurological disorders such as head trauma, stroke, brain tumors, and central nervous system infections.

In the neuropsychological assessment of cognitive impairment, a variety of tests and tools are used to assess different cognitive areas and determine the degree and nature of the cognitive deficit. This may include tests of memory, attention, executive functions, visuospatial skills, language, and other specific cognitive functions.

Brain tumors: Brain tumors are abnormal growths of cells in the brain that may be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). These tumors can affect a variety of cognitive and behavioral functions, making them an important area of study in neuropsychology. The impact of a brain tumor on cognitive functions depends on several factors, including the size and location of the tumor, as well as the type of cells affected. Some common neuropsychological effects of brain tumors include:

Memory impairments: Brain tumors can affect both short- and long-term memory, resulting in difficulty remembering recent or past information.

Changes in language: Depending on the location of the tumor, there may be difficulties with language comprehension, verbal expression and fluency.

Attention and concentration problems: Brain tumors can interfere with the ability to pay attention and maintain concentration on cognitive tasks.

Changes in executive functions: Executive functions, including planning, organization, decision making, and inhibitory control, may be impaired by brain tumors, resulting in difficulties in problem solving and self-regulation of behavior.

Changes in perception and vision: Depending on the location of the tumor, there may be alterations in visual perception and vision, affecting the ability to interpret the world around us.

Changes in personality or emotional disturbances: Usually, when the tumor is located in the frontal lobe or the mass effect with displacement compresses these areas, we can find some symptoms such as poor impulse control, inappropriate behavior, dysexecutive functioning, emotional lability, emotionality, among others.

Neuropsychological assessment plays a crucial role in understanding how a brain tumor affects an individual's cognitive and behavioral functions. This may include specific tests designed to assess areas such as memory, language, attention, executive functions, and visual perception. With this information, a personalized treatment and rehabilitation plan can be designed to address the patient's cognitive and behavioral needs.

Cerebral vascular events: Cerebrovascular events, such as strokes, are also an important area of study in neuropsychology because of their impact on cognitive and behavioral functions. A cerebrovascular event occurs when there is an interruption of blood flow to the brain, which may be due to a blockage (ischemic stroke) or a ruptured blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

These events can cause a wide variety of neuropsychological deficits, which depend on factors such as the location and size of the stroke, as well as the time that has passed since the event occurred. Some common neuropsychological effects of cerebrovascular events include:

Cognitive impairment: Strokes can cause deficits in a variety of cognitive areas, including memory, attention, executive functions, and language. These deficits can range from mild to severe, depending on the severity of the event and the areas of the brain affected.

Aphasias: Strokes that affect language-related areas of the brain can lead to aphasias, which are speech and language disorders that may include difficulty speaking, understanding spoken or written language, or finding the right words.

Apraxias: Strokes can also cause apraxias, which are movement disorders that make it difficult to perform coordinated, voluntary movements, such as gestures or complex motor activities.

Agnosias: neurological disorder characterized by the inability to recognize objects or stimuli despite intact sensory function, such as the recognition of faces or objects.

Spatial Negligence: Some people who have had a stroke may experience spatial neglect, which is a lack of awareness or attention to one side of the body or space, which can affect the ability to perform everyday activities.

Emotional and behavioral changes: Strokes can also have an impact on a person's emotional state and behavior, which may manifest itself in changes in mood, personality, irritability, or lack of motivation.

Head trauma: Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are injuries that affect the skull and brain and can have significant consequences on a person's cognitive and behavioral functions. Neuropsychology studies the impact of these injuries on brain function and works on assessing and rehabilitating the resulting deficits.

The type and severity of neuropsychological deficits associated with a TBI may vary depending on several factors, including the location and extent of the injury, the individual's age and previous health status, and the speed and effectiveness of treatment received.

Head trauma can often have microscopic lesions that cannot be seen on imaging studies, commonly known as diffuse axonal injury, which can have emotional or cognitive consequences.

Early stimulation: Early stimulation is a set of activities designed to promote the comprehensive development of babies and young children from birth through the first years of life. These activities are designed to stimulate the cognitive, emotional, social and physical development of the child during the critical stages of growth and brain development.

Early stimulation is based on the idea that the human brain is especially receptive during the first years of life, and that the experiences and stimulation received during this period can have a lasting impact on a child's development. Some of the basic principles of early stimulation include:

Affective interaction: The emotional bond between caregiver and child is essential for a child's emotional and social development. Affectionate interaction, physical contact, and displays of affection are important in creating a safe and caring environment that fosters a child's healthy development.

Sensory stimulation: Exposing your child to a variety of sensory input, such as colors, sounds, textures, and tastes, helps promote your child's sensory and cognitive development. This can include playing with sensory-stimulating toys, singing songs, reading books, and exploring the natural environment.

Play and exploration: Play is a natural way for children to explore the world around them, develop motor and social skills, and learn to solve problems. Providing opportunities for children to play actively and creatively is essential for their overall development.

Cognitive stimulation: Providing activities that challenge a child's mind, such as sorting games, simple puzzles, and counting and naming activities, helps promote a child's cognitive development and lay the foundation for future learning.

Language stimulation: Talking to your child, reading aloud, singing songs, and playing with words and sounds are effective ways to stimulate your child's language and communication development from an early age.

Genetic syndromes: In neuropsychology, genetic syndromes are of great interest due to their impact on cognitive and behavioral development. These syndromes can present a wide range of neuropsychological manifestations ranging from learning difficulties to more severe intellectual disabilities. Below I will mention some examples of genetic syndromes and their neuropsychological implications:

Down Syndrome: People with Down syndrome often have delayed cognitive development, difficulties with language, memory and attention, as well as a specific neuropsychological profile characterized by strengths in social skills and weaknesses in visuospatial skills.

Williams Syndrome: This syndrome is associated with difficulties in visual-spatial perception, deficits in executive functions, relatively preserved linguistic skills and a marked sociability.

Turner Syndrome: Women with Turner syndrome may have difficulties with visuospatial skills and spatial information processing, as well as deficits in verbal and nonverbal memory.

Prader-Willi syndrome: This syndrome is characterized by neonatal hypotonia, hyperphagia (overeating), delayed cognitive development, and difficulties in visual processing and working memory.

Angelman Syndrome: People with this syndrome may show delayed cognitive development, hyperactivity, problems with motor coordination, and difficulties in processing receptive and expressive language.

At Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic (“NSP Clinic”), a clinic located in San José del Cabo BCS, we understand the importance of bone health in the quality of life of our patients. Therefore, the bone densitometry study is an essential tool to evaluate bone mineral density and detect conditions such as osteopenia and osteoporosis.

At NSP, we are a center where our staff is certified by the AMMOM (Mexican Association of Bone Metabolism and Nutrition), our commitment is to provide comprehensive and patient-centered care. The most effective test to diagnose osteopenia in men >50 years and women >40 years postmenopausal mainly, is dual X-ray densitometry (DXA). This test measures bone mineral density in key areas, such as the spine, hip and forearm.

DXA results

The results include a medical report in which you will be given medical suggestions according to your result. It is also stored in our database for future comparative measurements. It is important for comparative studies of patients undergoing treatment for osteoporosis. In this way, when repeating the analysis, the effectiveness of the treatment can be compared and demonstrated, as well as the current condition of the patient.

Muscle mass assessment

Bioelectrical impedance (BIA): This method measures body composition and estimates muscle mass. Bone densitometry (DXA): Although its main objective is to measure bone density, it can also assess muscle mass, subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Through bone densitometry, we seek not only to diagnose, but also to provide our patients with the information necessary to make decisions, recover their health and inform them about the exercises they can perform based on their results. Complete Guide for Patients

The spine is the central pillar of the body, providing support and allowing movement. Over time, degenerative diseases, injuries or congenital problems can damage the joints of the spine, causing severe pain and limiting mobility. In these cases, the spinal arthroplasty It may be an option to relieve pain and improve quality of life.

In this guide, we will answer the most frequently asked questions patients often have about this procedure, providing the information you need to make informed decisions about your treatment.

What is spinal arthroplasty?

Spinal arthroplasty, also known as disk replacement, is a surgical procedure in which a damaged intervertebral disc in the spine is replaced with an artificial prosthesis. This procedure is designed to maintain natural movement between the vertebrae, unlike the spinal fusion, which eliminates movement in the affected segment.

Intervertebral discs act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae, allowing the spine to flex and move. When a disc degenerates or becomes damaged, it can cause severe pain, pressure on nerves, and other debilitating symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions from Patients

1. When is spinal arthroplasty recommended?

Spinal arthroplasty is usually recommended in the following cases:

  • Disc degeneration: When one or more intervertebral discs have lost their height and function due to wear and tear.
  • Chronic pain in the back or neck: That does not improve with conservative treatments, such as physical therapy, medication or injections.
  • Herniated discs: In cases where the damaged disk cannot be repaired by other methods.
  • Keep moving: If you want to preserve the natural movement of the spine and avoid the stiffness caused by spinal fusion.

2. What is the disk replacement procedure?

The procedure consists of the following general steps:

  1. AnesthesiaGeneral anesthesia is administered so that the patient is asleep and pain-free during surgery.
  2. Incision: The surgeon accesses the spine through a puncture wound, usually from the front of the neck or the lower abdomen, depending on the location of the affected disc.
  3. Removing the damaged disk: The damaged disc between the vertebrae is removed.
  4. Placement of the prosthesis: A disc prosthesis is inserted, which is designed to mimic the natural movement of the original disc.

The procedure usually takes between 2 and 3 hours, and may vary depending on the complexity of the case.

3. What is the difference between a spinal arthroplasty and a spinal fusion?

  • Spine arthroplasty: Maintains natural movement between the vertebrae. This is beneficial for preserving mobility and reducing the risk of adjacent vertebrae degenerating.
  • Spinal fusion: Fuses two or more vertebrae together to eliminate motion in the affected area. Although it can be effective in relieving pain, spinal fusion can increase the load on adjacent segments of the spine, which could lead to future problems.

4. What are the benefits of spinal arthroplasty?

  • Conservation of motion: Spinal arthroplasty allows the spine to remain flexible, which is particularly important for young or active patients.
  • Lower risk of degeneration at other levelsBy maintaining natural motion, arthroplasty can reduce the likelihood of nearby vertebrae wearing down.
  • Faster recoveryCompared to spinal fusion, patients who undergo arthroplasty typically experience faster recovery and less stiffness.

5. How long does recovery take?

Recovery varies from patient to patient, but generally speaking, you can expect the following:

  • Hospitalization: Generally between 1 and 3 days.
  • Initial phase: For the first few weeks, it is important to limit strenuous physical activities and avoid lifting heavy objects. Physical therapy is usually started soon after surgery to strengthen the muscles of the spine.
  • Full recovery: Depending on the previous activity level and the extent of the surgery, full recovery may take from 3 to 6 months.

6. Is recovery painful?

Pain is common after surgery, especially in the first few weeks. However, you will be prescribed medications to help manage the pain and improve your comfort. As your body adjusts to the prosthesis and heals, the pain should gradually decrease.

7. Can I return to my normal activities after arthroplasty?

Yes, most patients who undergo spinal replacement surgery experience significant improvement in quality of life. Most are able to return to their daily activities, including walking, swimming, and in many cases, participating in low-impact sports.

8. What can I do to prepare for surgery?

Proper preparation is key to a successful recovery. Some recommendations include:

  • Stay active: Strengthen your back muscles and improve flexibility with gentle exercises before surgery.
  • Quit smoking: Smoking can interfere with healing, so it is advisable to stop smoking before surgery.
  • Preparing your home: Organize your home to facilitate your mobility and postoperative rest.

9. How long will the disc prosthesis last?

Modern disc prostheses are designed to last for many years. However, their longevity depends on factors such as the patient's level of physical activity, weight, and bone health. In many cases, prostheses can last between 10 and 20 years or more.

10. Is it possible for a prosthesis to trigger an alarm when passing through metal detectors?

No, this will not happen. The prostheses are made of titanium, a biocompatible and non-ferromagnetic material, which means that it does not trigger alarm signals in metal detectors used in airports and other security systems. Titanium is widely used in medical implants precisely because of these properties, in addition to its strength and durability. However, it is advisable to inform security personnel about the presence of the prosthesis to avoid inconveniences.

Conclusion

Spinal arthroplasty is an excellent option for patients suffering from chronic spinal pain due to disc degeneration or injury. This innovative procedure not only relieves pain, but also allows the patient to maintain natural spinal mobility, significantly improving their quality of life.

If you are considering spinal replacement surgery, it is important to consult with a spine specialist to determine if this treatment is right for you. Neuro Spine & Pain Clinic, we are here to answer all your questions and guide you on your path to a pain-free life.

Every September 24, the world unites in the commemoration of International Day of Cancer ResearchThis date is much more than a reminder of a disease that affects millions of people around the world; it is a celebration of scientific advances, innovative treatments and the hope provided by health professionals and researchers committed to finding new solutions.

Why is cancer research important?

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were more than 19 million new cases and nearly 10 million cancer-related deaths in 2020. More than 35 million new cases of cancer are expected in 2050, an increase of 77% from the estimated 20 million cases in 2022. However, thanks to ongoing research, the picture is changing significantly.

  1. Prevention: Research has shown that certain risk factors, such as tobacco, obesity, exposure to radiation and some viruses (such as HPV and HIV), are linked to the development of several types of cancer. With this information, awareness campaigns and vaccination programmes have helped to reduce the incidence of these types of cancer.
  2. Early diagnosis:Early detection is one of the most crucial factors in improving survival rates. Research programs have developed more sensitive diagnostic tools, such as genetic testing and advanced imaging, that can identify cancer in its earliest stages, when it is most treatable.
  3. Advances in treatments: Research has enabled the development of more specific and personalised treatments. Today, approaches such as immunotherapy and targeted therapy are used, which are able to attack cancer cells more precisely, reducing side effects in patients.

The role of technology in the fight against cancer

Scientific research would not be possible without technological innovation. Today, tools like artificial intelligence and DNA sequencing are transforming the way cancer is approached. AI, for example, can analyze large amounts of medical data to identify patterns that will help doctors predict how a disease will progress or which treatments will work best for a particular patient.

On the other hand, an innovative way in which Neuro Spine & Pain Clinic contributes to the prevention of any type of cancer is by offering our patients personalized studies with the evaluation of genetic predisposition in DNA.

How can you support cancer research?

There are many ways you can contribute to this important cause, from donating to organizations that fund scientific studies to participating in clinical trials. Even something as simple as staying informed about medical advances and adopting a healthy lifestyle can make a significant difference.

The importance of consulting specialists

While research has made impressive progress, a critical part of effective treatment for cancer and other related health problems is timely diagnosis and proper care. Neuro Spine & Pain ClinicAt , we are committed to the comprehensive health of our patients. We have a team of highly trained specialists, led by Neurosurgeon Raúl Rincón-Navarro, to offer advanced treatments in various areas, such as chronic pain management and the treatment of conditions related to the nervous system.

At NSP Clinic, nutrition is an integral part of our holistic approach to the health and well-being of our patients. We recognize that proper nutrition plays a crucial role in brain health, spine health, and pain management. Therefore, we offer personalized nutritional counseling services to help our patients optimize their diet and improve their quality of life.

Our nutrition experts work closely with our patients to develop meal plans tailored to their individual needs and health goals. These plans may include specific recommendations on key nutrients for brain and spinal health, as well as guidelines for a balanced diet that supports pain and inflammation reduction.

Nutrition plays a vital role in our overall health, but have you ever considered how it specifically affects the health of your brain and spine? At NSP Clinic, we are committed to providing a comprehensive approach to the well-being of our patients, and nutrition is a crucial part of that approach. In this blog, we will explore the importance of proper nutrition for brain and spine health, and how NSP Clinic can help you optimize your diet to improve your quality of life.

Brain Nutrition:

The brain is an incredibly complex organ that requires a variety of nutrients to function optimally. From omega-3 fatty acids to antioxidants and B vitamins, a balanced diet can have a significant impact on brain health. At NSP Clinic, our nutrition experts work with patients to develop meal plans that include foods rich in these key nutrients. This can help improve cognition, concentration, and overall brain function.

Nutrition for the Spine:

The spine is the central axis of our body and plays a crucial role in our mobility and physical well-being. Nutrition plays an important role in spinal health, especially when it comes to the health of the intervertebral discs and the prevention of diseases such as osteoporosis. At NSP Clinic, our nutrition programs are designed to support spinal health by providing patients with the nutrients necessary to maintain spinal strength and flexibility. Although their primary focus is on promoting health through proper nutrition, they can also work on preventing and treating a variety of conditions.

Some of the conditions that a nutritionist can treat

Foods for Optimal Health:

We encourage our patients to include a variety of healthy foods in their daily diet. This includes colorful fruits and vegetables, healthy fats like those found in avocado and nuts, and lean protein sources like fish and chicken. We also recommend limiting processed foods and foods high in added sugars, which can have negative effects on brain and spine health.

Personalization and Support:

Every patient is unique, and at NSP Clinic we understand that one size does not fit all when it comes to nutrition. That’s why we offer customized nutrition programs that take into account each patient’s individual needs, as well as their health and lifestyle goals. Our nutrition experts work closely with patients to develop meal plans that are realistic, sustainable, and effective.

Anemia:

Anemia is a medical condition characterized by a decrease in the number of red blood cells or the levels of hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is a protein present in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all cells in the body. When hemoglobin levels are low, it can result in a variety of symptoms, such as fatigue, weakness, paleness, shortness of breath, and dizziness.

Diabetes:

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the way the body processes blood glucose. Glucose is the main source of energy for the body and comes from the food we eat. Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin (a hormone that helps regulate blood glucose levels) or does not use insulin effectively.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

It is a common endocrine disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It is characterized by hormonal imbalances that can cause a variety of symptoms, such as irregular menstrual periods, infertility, weight gain, acne, and excessive facial or body hair growth. Nutrition plays an important role in the management of PCOS, as certain foods and dietary patterns can influence the symptoms and hormonal health of women with this disorder.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS):

Also known as irritable bowel syndrome, it is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder that affects the normal functioning of the large intestine. It is characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or both), gas, and general discomfort. Nutrition plays an important role in the management of irritable bowel syndrome, as certain foods and dietary patterns can trigger or relieve symptoms.

High blood pressure:

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a medical condition in which the force exerted by blood against the walls of the arteries is chronically too high. This condition can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other health problems if not properly controlled.

Eating disorders:

They are serious conditions that affect people's physical, emotional, and mental health. They are often characterized by abnormal eating behaviors, obsessive concerns about weight and body image, and can have devastating consequences if not treated properly. Nutrition plays a crucial role in the treatment of eating disorders, as restoring a healthy eating pattern is essential for recovery.

Gastrointestinal diseases:

These are conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum. These diseases can vary in severity and symptoms, and can be acute or chronic. Nutrition plays a key role in the management and treatment of many gastrointestinal diseases.

Nutrition before surgery:

Also known as preoperative nutrition, it is crucial to prepare the body and promote optimal recovery after surgery. Here are some important aspects about preoperative nutrition:

1. Optimization of nutritional status: Before undergoing surgery, it is important for the patient to be in an optimal nutritional state. This means consuming a balanced diet that provides all the nutrients necessary to maintain health and strengthen the immune system. If nutritional deficiencies are detected, supplementation may be required under the supervision of a health professional.

2. Weight management: For some patients, especially those with obesity, weight loss may be recommended before surgery to reduce the risk of complications during and after the procedure. However, rapid or drastic weight loss may not be safe or effective, so it is important to seek guidance from a health care professional to set safe and achievable weight loss goals.

3. Chronic disease control: Chronic diseases such as diabetes,

High blood pressure and cardiovascular disease can increase the risk of complications during surgery. Therefore, it is important to manage these medical conditions through healthy eating, medications (if necessary), and regular medical follow-up before surgery.

4. Avoid certain foods and supplements: In the days leading up to surgery, you may be advised to avoid certain foods and supplements that may increase the risk of complications during surgery, such as those that have blood-thinning effects or may cause gastrointestinal distress. It is important to follow any specific recommendations from your medical team or surgeon.

5. Education and support: It is important for patients to receive education and support regarding the importance of preoperative nutrition and how they can adequately prepare for surgery. This may include consulting with a registered dietitian to develop a personalized eating plan and receiving guidance on supplements, if necessary.

At NSP Clinic, we believe that nutrition is an essential component of brain and spine health. By providing our patients with the knowledge, resources, and support to optimize their nutrition, we are helping to improve their quality of life and overall well-being. Clinical psychology is a core discipline at Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic as it addresses emotional and mental aspects that may be associated with medical conditions treated at the clinic, such as spinal problems, chronic pain, and neurological disorders. Here are some ways clinical psychology can benefit patients at NSP Clinic:

Assessment and diagnosis

Clinical psychologists can conduct comprehensive assessments to better understand the emotional and mental state of patients.

Emotional support

Living with chronic pain or facing spinal surgery or other medical procedure can be emotionally challenging. At NSP Clinic we offer emotional support to patients, providing them with a safe space to express their concerns, fears and emotions related to their medical condition and treatment.

Pain management

Clinical psychology can play an important role in chronic pain management. Clinical psychologists at NSP Clinic can teach patients coping techniques and pain management strategies, such as relaxation, deep breathing, visualization, and mindfulness, which can help reduce pain perception and improve quality of life.

Pain management in clinical psychology is a comprehensive approach that recognizes the interaction between physical pain and a person's psychological, emotional, and social aspects. Clinical psychologists who specialize in pain management work collaboratively with other health professionals, such as physicians, physical therapists, and rehabilitation specialists, to provide a holistic approach to the treatment of chronic and acute pain.

Some important aspects of pain management in clinical psychology include:

Comprehensive assessment

Clinical psychologists conduct a comprehensive assessment of an individual's pain experience, taking into account not only the nature and intensity of the physical pain, but also the psychological, emotional and social factors that may be contributing to the pain.

This may include assessment of medical history, stressors, anxiety, depression, mood, beliefs and attitudes toward pain, and social and environmental factors.

Education and managing expectations

Clinical psychologists educate patients about chronic and acute pain, including the nature of pain, factors that may influence pain perception, and effective pain management strategies. They help patients set realistic expectations about pain management and develop effective pain coping skills.

Relaxation and stress reduction techniques

Clinical psychologists teach patients relaxation techniques, deep breathing, mindfulness, and other stress reduction strategies to help relieve the physical and mental tension associated with pain. These techniques can help improve pain perception and reduce associated anxiety and depression.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

CBT is a widely used therapeutic approach to pain management that focuses on identifying and changing negative thoughts and behaviors associated with pain. Clinical psychologists work with patients to identify distorted thoughts about pain, develop skills to manage emotional distress, and develop effective pain coping strategies.

Emotional and psychosocial support

Clinical psychologists provide emotional and psychosocial support to patients experiencing chronic and acute pain, helping them cope with the emotional and social challenges associated with pain. This may include managing anxiety and depression, improving communication skills, and engaging in social and recreational activities.

Some of the most common conditions that a clinical psychologist can treat include:

Bulimia: It is a serious eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food intake followed by compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain. These compensatory behaviors may include self-induced vomiting, excessive use of laxatives or diuretics, fasting, or excessive exercise.

Anorexia: Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by extreme restriction of food intake, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted perception of one's body and body weight. People with anorexia often have a very negative body image and strive to achieve and maintain an extremely low body weight, even if it means putting their health at risk.

Obesity: Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by excess body fat that can have negative effects on health. It occurs when calorie intake is greater than energy expenditure over time, leading to increased fat storage in the body. Obesity is commonly defined by body mass index (BMI), which is a measure of the ratio of a person's weight to height.

Binge Eating Disorder: Also known as binge eating disorder, it is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food intake in a specific period of time, accompanied by a feeling of loss of control and subsequent guilt or shame. Unlike bulimia nervosa, people with binge eating disorder do not engage in compensatory behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting or excessive use of laxatives, to prevent weight gain.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): It is a mental health disorder characterized by the presence of recurrent obsessive thoughts and/or repetitive compulsive behaviors. These obsessions and compulsions cause significant distress and can interfere with the daily life of the person experiencing them.

Eating disorders (ED): These are serious eating disorders that affect both a person's physical and mental health. These disorders can have a significant impact on daily life, personal relationships, and emotional well-being.

Anxiety: Anxiety is a natural response of the body to stressful or threatening situations. It is an emotion that we all experience at some point in our lives and can manifest itself in different ways, such as worry, nervousness, fear or tension. Anxiety can be a normal and adaptive experience that helps us cope with challenges or dangers in our daily lives.

Depression: It's a mood disorder that affects how you feel, think, and handle daily activities. It's more than just feeling sad or going through a period of low energy; it's a serious medical condition that can affect every aspect of your life, including your emotions, behaviors, and physical health.

Our clinical psychologist uses a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), among others, tailored to the individual needs of each patient.

At NSP Clinic, we are committed to providing a supportive and understanding environment where our patients can feel safe to explore their thoughts, feelings, and concerns, and work toward greater emotional and mental well-being. In today's world, where the pace of life is increasingly faster and demands are increasing, it is crucial to pay attention not only to our physical health, but also to our mental health. Mental health is an essential component to overall well-being and affects all aspects of our lives, from our personal relationships to our performance at work. Next, we explore why it is so important to take care of our mental health? and how NSP clinic can help you?

What is mental health?

Mental health refers to a person's emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects the way we think, feel and act. It also influences the way we manage stress, relate to others and make decisions. Mental health is important at all stages of life, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood.

Why is Mental Health important?

  1. Impact on Physical Health: Mental health and physical health are intrinsically connected. Chronic stress, anxiety and depression can have negative effects on our bodies, increasing the risk of heart disease, sleep disorders and digestive problems.
  2. Improvement of Interpersonal Relationships: Good mental health allows us to maintain healthier and more satisfying relationships. It helps us communicate effectively, resolve conflicts constructively, and establish deeper emotional bonds with others.
  3. Increased Productivity and Performance: People with good mental health tend to be more productive and perform better at work. They have a greater ability to concentrate, make decisions and manage work stress.
  4. Emotional Wellbeing: Maintaining good mental health helps us experience positive emotions such as happiness, satisfaction and gratitude. It also allows us to better manage negative emotions, such as sadness, anger and frustration.

How can we take care of our Mental Health?

  1. Practice Self-Care: Reserve time for activities that you enjoy and that relax you, such as reading, walking, listening to music, or practicing a hobby.
  2. Maintain an Active Life: Regular exercise not only improves physical health, but also has significant mental health benefits, such as reducing stress and improving mood.
  3. Foster Positive Relationships: Maintaining healthy social connections and leaning on friends and family in times of need can provide great emotional support.
  4. Seek Professional Help: If you feel like you can't handle stress, anxiety, or depression on your own, it's important to seek help from a mental health professional. Therapy and counseling can be very effective tools.
  5. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: These techniques can help reduce stress and increase emotional awareness, which contributes to better management of emotions.
  6. Maintain a Healthy Diet: A balanced diet can positively influence your mood and energy levels.
  7. Sleep well: Quality sleep is essential for mental health. Trying to maintain a regular sleep schedule and creating an environment conducive to rest can make a big difference.

Taking care of our mental health is an investment in our overall well-being. By adopting habits and practices that promote a healthy mind, we not only improve our quality of life, but we also become better equipped to face the challenges of everyday life. Let us remember that seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of strength and commitment to our well-being. Mental health is as important as physical health, and deserves our constant attention and care.

At our clinic we are committed to your comprehensive well-being. If you need support or have questions about how to improve your mental health, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help you and we have psychologists very prepared to help you on your path to your mental well-being.

The body is a perfect machine that works with all the hormones, enzymes and neurotransmitters, resembling a symphony orchestra, but it is up to us to maintain this constant balance.

One of its main organs is the pancreas, which is the organ that produces many hormones and enzymes, however, today we will focus on a hormone called insulin. Insulin helps introduce the glucose we consume in food into our body's cells and thus use it as a source of energy.

Most people today consume a large amount of calories, especially carbohydrates. The constant consumption of calories generates a large amount of glucose, which causes our pancreas to produce a lot of insulin. However, after being exposed to so much glucose, cells lose sensitivity to insulin and we can develop a condition called insulin resistance, which can lead to prediabetes and then diabetes.

It is common these days to have an imbalance between glucose and insulin, and sometimes we don't even notice it. Right now you could be having an insulin imbalance, so it is important that you pay attention to the following symptoms and go to a first contact doctor in the following cases:

  • If you experience dizziness.
  • You feel a constant headache.
  • Excessive thirst that does not improve despite drinking a lot of water.
  • You get very sleepy after eating.
  • You frequently experience swelling in your hands or feet.
  • You experience rapid weight gain or loss.
  • If you don't eat on time and you feel very bad.
  • You have a great need to consume sugar or flour.
  • You suffer from chronic fatigue.
  • You wake up during the night.
  • You have unexplained anxiety attacks.
  • If you eat compulsively.
  • You are very hungry throughout the day.
  • You need caffeine or sugary things to wake you up.
  • You feel shaky between meals.
  • You have a mental cloud or difficulty concentrating.
  • Have you noticed that your waist has been getting wider despite having tried to lose weight several times, but you never succeed or it is difficult for you.

These are just some of the most common symptoms of an insulin imbalance, but the patient should always be studied individually to determine what it is.

If your doctor has already diagnosed you with diabetes, prediabetes, or insulin resistance, I want to share some tips that I'm sure will help you balance your glucose and insulin levels and feel better every day.

Tips to balance your glucose and insulin:

1.Dress carbs.

First of all, let's start by analyzing what carbohydrates are? These are a type of macronutrient which is usually our main source of energy. There are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are a type of simple sugar found in foods such as sugar in desserts and sweets, processed foods, soft drinks, and in fruit in the form of fructose.

Complex carbohydrates are made of many simple sugars joined together. The body needs to break down these types of complex carbohydrates into simple ones in order to use them as a source of energy. Complex carbohydrates are usually starchy vegetables such as cereals, bread, pasta; and some vegetables such as potatoes, peas, sweet potatoes and corn.

Another type of complex carbohydrate is fiber. Most fiber cannot be broken down in the body, so it is important to consume fiber in our diet to balance our glucose. If you are looking for that balance, I recommend consuming both simple and complex carbohydrates, always accompanied by good quality fat or protein.

2. The order of the factors does alter the product.”

Normally this saying does not go like this, but in the event that we want to balance our glucose, having an order when it comes to feeding will greatly influence your health.

If we want to see results, it is necessary to follow a specific meal sequence, which may or may not help regulate our insulin level.

I recommend eating fiber first, such as a salad with lots of green leaves like lettuce, spinach, arugula, kale, and nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds. After that, I suggest eating protein and fat or in conjunction with your salad, like a nice lean cut of chicken or fish.

If you want dessert, make sure it's after you've eaten a lot of protein and fat. This will help you avoid glucose spikes that cause long-term inflammation.

In Mexico, it is common to eat fruit before a main course, which makes our pancreas work much harder than indicated.

3. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet.

First, I'll talk about fiber. Fiber is a type of complex carbohydrate and there are two types: soluble and insoluble fiber.

Digestion is delayed because soluble fiber attracts water and turns it into a gel during the process. Oats, lentils, fruits and vegetables are some examples of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber has been scientifically proven to reduce blood cholesterol.

Insoluble fiber, found in foods such as wheat bran, some vegetables, and whole grains, is another type of fiber. This type of fiber adds bulk to stool and speeds the passage of food through the stomach and intestines.

Fiber can be a great ally to balance our glucose and insulin, it is essential for good gastrointestinal health and provides us with antioxidants such as polyphenols to maintain our health.

Constipation and other gastrointestinal problems can be treated with a high-fiber diet. Many plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, chickpeas, lentils, lima beans, and whole grains, contain fiber.

I advise that you add fiber to your three meals, either in smoothies or smoothies, salads, baked vegetables, vegetable creams or soups. This will increase the nutritional density and provide you with plenty of antioxidants.

It is important to treat each situation individually, as excessive fiber consumption can have an impact on people with gastrointestinal problems and cause gas, bloating and cramps.

4. Prioritize protein.

First we will see what are proteins?; They are like a structure of multiple bricks, which will later become amino acids. For the growth and maintenance of our cells and tissues, our body needs dietary protein. Age and weight affect the amount of protein we need. On average, an adult should consume 1 gram of protein per kilo of weight. Several sources indicate that the maximum protein limit should be 2 grams per kilo of weight.

If you weigh 150 pounds, you should consume at least 70 grams of protein daily to meet your protein needs. The quality of proteins of animal and plant origin depends on the quantity and types of amino acids they contain.

We should make sure we consume high-quality protein from healthy sources every day.

A typical protein has 300 or more amino acids, and the sequence and number of amino acids in each protein are different. Furthermore, amino acids are classified as essential and non-essential. As the name implies, the body cannot produce essential amino acids, so we need these amino acids from the diet. Diet is not necessary because the body can produce non-essential amino acids.

I would like his diet to be rich in protein as it will not only help him feel more satisfied, but will also meet the amino acid requirements necessary for his digestive health, immune system and overall well-being.

5. Take care of the quality of your food.

The calories in a nutrient-dense chicken salad are not the same as those in a soft drink. By “quality foods” I mean that you prioritize making your foods as natural as possible and avoiding packaged products; try to always or most of the time cook at home from scratch so you can ensure that what goes into your food is of the highest quality; Try to eat foods that are local or organic if possible.

Fortunately, every day we can find more options for organic products at better prices. Avoid ultra-processed foods, to give you an idea that ultra-processed foods are all the foods that are in the supermarket aisles which have preservatives and additives to keep them in good condition for a long time.

I hope these five tips help you a lot, the Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic team seeks to share valuable information for our community and in a personalized way to address each case. Don't forget that it is advisable to consult a health professional before making decisions about diet.

The Super Inductive System (SIS) is emerging as a revolutionary innovation, offering promising benefits to both patients and healthcare professionals. This cutting-edge system operates on the principles of inductive technology, opening a new era of non-invasive treatments and personalized medical care that we provide to you here at Neuro Spine and Paine Clinic.

It is a cutting-edge medical technology designed to harness the power of electromagnetic fields for therapeutic purposes. Unlike traditional medical interventions, SIS focuses on inducing controlled electromagnetic fields to stimulate specific physiological responses within the human body. This non-invasive approach opens up a world of possibilities for treating various medical conditions.

How does the SIS work in the Human Body?

The intense electromagnetic field triggers an action potential and depolarizes the nerves, causing muscle contractions.

The Super Inductive System is designed to treat painful neuromuscular and skeletal conditions without the assistance of an operator. This versatile technology can cover acute and chronic pain, muscle relaxation and stimulation, releasing joint blockages, and supporting fracture recovery.

These fields penetrate the body's tissues, reaching the cellular level without causing any damage. The interaction between electromagnetic fields and the body's cells triggers a cascade of responses, promoting recovery, reducing inflammation and improving overall well-being.

The SIS operates on the principles of inductive coupling, where an electromagnetic field generated by the system induces a current within the body's tissues.

This induced current stimulates cellular activities such as increased blood flow, enhanced nutrient delivery, and acceleration of tissue repair. The therapeutic effects are diverse, making SIS a versatile tool in the medical field.

Benefits of the Super Inductive System in Medicine

1. Non-Invasive Treatment

One of the main advantages of SIS is its non-invasive nature. This not only reduces the risk of complications, but also improves patient comfort and adherence to their personalized treatment at our clinic.

The electromagnetic field intensity of 2.5 Tesla triggers strong muscle contractions and contributes to pain control. The frequency range of 1-150 Hz and a variety of amplitude modulations maximize therapeutic efficiency.

The Super Inductive System is an operator-free procedure that saves you time, is applied to clothing and has no consumables or disposables. Our Cool-Flow technology ensures continuous use of the device in your practice when treating multiple patients consecutively.

2. Versatility in Medical Applications

The Super Inductive System has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in various medical applications. From musculoskeletal disorders and chronic pain management to neurological conditions and wound healing, the SIS offers a versatile solution for a wide range of healthcare needs.

3. Accelerated Recovery

SIS accelerates the body's natural healing processes. By promoting cellular repair and regeneration, it accelerates recovery times for patients dealing with injuries, surgeries or chronic conditions. This can significantly improve quality of life for people seeking non-invasive treatment.

4. Personalized Treatment Plans

The ability of SIS to target specific tissues and cells allows for personalized treatment plans. Healthcare professionals can tailor therapy to address each patient's unique needs, ensuring more effective and efficient results.

OTHER THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS

JOINT MOBILIZATION

Joint mobilization is achieved through repetitive contractions of the muscles surrounding the joint capsule.

This repetitive contraction replaces manual joint mobilization, leading to restoration of joint play.

FRACTURE HEALING

The high-intensity electromagnetic field improves blood circulation in the affected area and supports the formation of vascular callus and cartilage. Consequently, progressive cartilage mineralization and bone remodeling begin.

REDUCTION OF SPASTICITY

Inhibition of an increase in muscle tone is achieved by affecting the spinal level of muscle tone control. This mechanism is indicated for the treatment of central motor failure, in which spasticity occurs.

MIOSTIMULATION

The interaction of the electromagnetic field within the neuromuscular tissue results in nerve depolarization and muscle contractions. Depending on the selected stimulation frequency, muscle strengthening can be achieved.

At our specialist clinic, we understand the importance of keeping our patients and the local community informed about the latest innovations. The Super Inductive System (SIS) is a fascinating example of how technology is improving healthcare and transforming lives. If you would like to learn more or schedule a consultation to explore how these innovations can benefit you, please do not hesitate to contact us. The health and well-being of our community is our priority.

The pediatric neurology specialists who are part of the NSP Clinic medical team play a fundamental role in the care and treatment of children and adolescents with neurological disorders. With a solid academic background and extensive clinical experience, our specialists are recognized for their dedication, compassion, and experience in caring for pediatric patients and their families.

Pediatric neurology is a fascinating and vital medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders in children, from newborns to adolescents. In this exciting field, doctors are dedicated to understanding and addressing a wide range of neurological conditions that can affect the development and well-being of children in their earliest stages of life.

From the moment they are born, children's brains are constantly developing and growing. During the early stages of life, crucial neural connections are established that will form the basis of your cognitive, emotional, and physical functioning later in life. Pediatric neurology is concerned with monitoring this process closely, identifying any irregularities that may arise and providing early interventions when necessary.

Neurological disorders in children can manifest in many different ways and can affect areas such as movement, speech, cognition and behavior. Some of the most common conditions that pediatric neurologists see include:

Epilepsy: It is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Pediatric neurologists evaluate and manage seizures in children, prescribing antiepileptic medications and, in some cases, considering surgery for more severe cases.

There are different types of epilepsy in children, which can vary in terms of clinical presentation, seizure frequency and possible underlying causes. Some of the most common types include idiopathic epilepsy, which has no identifiable cause, and symptomatic epilepsy, which occurs as a result of a brain injury or an underlying medical condition.

Multiple sclerosis: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) in which the body's immune system attacks myelin, the protective layer that covers nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. This results in inflammation and damage to myelin, which interferes with the nervous system's ability to transmit signals properly.

Developmental disorders: These may include autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), motor developmental disorder, and other neurodevelopmental disorders that affect a child's cognitive and behavioral abilities.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition that affects brain development and manifests itself in problems with communication, social interaction, and repetitive or restrictive behaviors.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurological disorder that affects children and sometimes adults. It is characterized by attention problems, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that can interfere with daily functioning and academic performance.

Cerebral palsy: It is a movement and posture disorder that occurs due to injuries or abnormalities in the developing brain. Pediatric neurologists work with other health professionals to manage symptoms and improve the quality of life of children with cerebral palsy.

There are several types of cerebral palsy, which are classified according to the type of movement and the part of the body affected. Common types include:

Spastic: Characterized by rigid and tense muscles.

Dyslexic or Dyskinetic: Characterized by involuntary and uncontrolled movements.

Ataxic: Characterized by balance and coordination problems.

Mixed: Combination of two or more types of PC.

Autoimmune diseases: Autoimmune diseases in children are disorders in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, just as in adults. Although less common than in adults, these conditions can affect children of all ages, from babies to teenagers.

Post-infectious encephalitis: It is a condition in which inflammation develops in the brain after a viral or bacterial infection. This inflammation can cause a variety of neurological symptoms that can be serious and potentially dangerous if not treated properly.

Migraines: Migraines can also affect children. Pediatric neurologists can diagnose and treat migraines in children, helping them find pain relief and manage triggers.

Childhood migraines, also known as pediatric migraines, are a type of recurring and debilitating headache that affects children and adolescents. Although migraines are more common in adults, they can also occur in children, and can have a significant impact on their quality of life and daily functioning.

Sleep disorders: Sleep problems in children, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and circadian rhythm disorders, can affect their health and development. Pediatric neurologists can evaluate and treat these disorders to improve children's sleep quality.

Sleep disorders in pediatric patients are conditions that can affect the quality and quantity of sleep in children and adolescents. These disorders can have a significant impact on children's physical, emotional and cognitive well-being, as well as their daily functioning and quality of life.

Neuromuscular disorders: These include conditions such as muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, and other diseases that affect muscles and neuromuscular function. Neuromuscular disorders in children are conditions that affect the peripheral nervous system and muscles, causing muscle weakness, spasms, muscle stiffness, and other symptoms related to muscle function and movement control.

Headaches: In addition to migraines, children may experience other types of headaches, such as tension headaches and cluster headaches. Pediatric neurologists can evaluate and treat these conditions to improve children's well-being.

Tension headaches in children are headaches that are characterized by a feeling of pressure or tightness in the head. They can be episodic or chronic and can be associated with factors such as stress, anxiety, poor posture, lack of sleep and muscle tension. Cluster headaches are rare in children, but they can occur. They are characterized by severe, repetitive headaches that occur in cycles or clusters, usually on one side of the head.

Cluster headaches may be accompanied by symptoms such as watery eyes, nasal congestion, and agitation. These are just a few examples of the many conditions that pediatric neurologists may encounter in their clinical practice. Each case is unique and requires an individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment, with the goal of improving the quality of life and development of affected children.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis and Comprehensive Treatment

In pediatric neurology, early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment are essential to optimize long-term outcomes for children. Identifying and addressing neurological disorders early can help minimize complications and improve neurological development and function. Advances in medical technology, such as MRI and genetic testing, have significantly improved our ability to diagnose and treat these disorders more accurately and effectively.

As we advance the field of pediatric neurology, a world of exciting possibilities opens up. Continued research and advances in the understanding of childhood neuroscience are transforming the way we diagnose and treat neurological disorders in children.

As part of the NSP Clinic team, Dr. Loman and Dr. Mellado collaborate closely with other medical specialists, therapists and healthcare professionals to provide their patients with comprehensive and coordinated care. Their multidisciplinary approach ensures that each child receives an individualized treatment plan that addresses their specific needs and improves their long-term quality of life.

In conclusion, pediatric neurology plays a crucial role in children's health care, addressing a variety of neurological challenges that can affect children's development and well-being. With a focus on early diagnosis, comprehensive treatment and child-centered care, we are committed to providing the best possible care to our pediatric patients and helping them reach their full potential.

At Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic, we are committed to providing our patients with the most advanced tools for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of brain, spine, and pain-related conditions.

One of the key services we offer is the DEXA Scan, a cutting-edge technology that plays a vital role in the assessment of bone health and body composition. In this blog, we will explore how the DEXA Scan fits into our services at NSP Clinic and why it is an invaluable tool for our patients' health.

What is DEXA Scan and how is it used at NSP Clinic?

The DEXA Scan is a medical imaging technique that uses low-dose x-rays to measure bone mineral density and body composition with exceptional precision. At NSP Clinic we use the DEXA Scan to evaluate the bone health of our patients, especially those with conditions such as osteoporosis, osteopenia or those at risk of bone fractures. In addition, we also use DEXA Scan to evaluate body composition in patients with obesity, sarcopenia or other metabolic conditions.

Why is DEXA Scan important at NSP Clinic?

At NSP Clinic, we recognize the importance of an accurate and detailed assessment of bone health and body composition to provide effective and personalized treatment to our patients. The DEXA Scan allows us to detect changes in bone density and body composition early, allowing us to proactively intervene to prevent fractures, improve bone health and optimize body composition. Additionally, the DEXA Scan provides us with invaluable information to monitor the effectiveness of treatments and adjust management strategies as necessary.

Having a DEXA Scan is important for several fundamental reasons related to bone health and body composition:

Early detection of osteoporosis and risk of fractures:

The DEXA Scan is the most accurate tool to measure bone mineral density, allowing early detection of osteoporosis or assessment of the risk of bone fractures. Identifying these problems early can allow for preventive interventions and effective treatments to reduce the risk of fractures and improve bone health.

Osteoporosis treatment monitoring:

For those already being treated for osteoporosis or other bone conditions, the DEXA Scan is crucial for monitoring response to treatment over time. This helps adjust treatment approaches as needed and ensure that improvement in bone density is being achieved.

Body composition assessment:

In addition to measuring bone mineral density, the DEXA Scan also provides information about body composition, including the amount of fat, muscle and other tissues. This is useful for assessing metabolic health, identifying obesity or sarcopenia, and guiding exercise and nutrition programs.

Identification of metabolic health risks:

Body composition measured by DEXA Scan can provide information about the risk of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This allows for preventive interventions and lifestyle changes to improve overall health.

Personalization of health care:

By providing a detailed assessment of bone health and body composition, the DEXA Scan allows healthcare professionals to design personalized treatment plans and management programs for each individual, taking into account their specific needs and health risks.

Benefits:

In addition to its role in assessing bone health and body composition, the DEXA Scan also offers other benefits to our patients at NSP Clinic. These include minimal radiation exposure, fast and accurate results, and the convenience of a short-term, non-invasive procedure. Our highly trained team of medical and technical professionals work closely with our patients to ensure a safe, comfortable and effective DEXA Scan experience.

Here is a list of some of the key benefits of the DEXA Scan:

Accuracy in measuring bone mineral density:

The DEXA Scan is considered the gold standard for the evaluation of bone mineral density. It provides accurate and reliable measurements of the amount of calcium and other minerals in bones, allowing accurate assessment of fracture risk and early detection of conditions such as osteoporosis.

Body composition assessment:

In addition to measuring bone density, the DEXA Scan also provides detailed information about body composition, including the amount of lean mass (muscles and organs), fat mass and water in the body. This information is useful in assessing metabolic health, designing exercise programs, and monitoring weight loss progress.

Early detection of health conditions:

The DEXA Scan can help detect early health conditions such as osteoporosis, osteopenia and sarcopenia, which can increase the risk of bone fractures, muscle weakness and other complications. This allows doctors to proactively intervene with preventative measures and appropriate treatments.

Effectiveness in monitoring treatment:

For patients with osteoporosis or other bone conditions, the DEXA Scan is an invaluable tool for monitoring treatment effectiveness over time. Doctors can use the scan results to evaluate whether medications or other approaches are being effective in improving bone density and reducing the risk of fractures.

Safety and comfort:

The DEXA Scan is a non-invasive procedure that involves minimal radiation exposure, making it safe and comfortable for most patients. Additionally, the scan is quick and generally painless, making it a convenient option for assessment of bone health and body composition.

To perform a DEXA Scan at Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic (NSP Clinic), you would follow these steps:

The first thing you should do is make an appointment at NSP Clinic for a DEXA Scan. You can do this by calling the clinic by phone or by clicking on the following link: https://www.nsp.clinic/#contacto

You may be given some specific instructions before your appointment, such as avoiding taking calcium supplements for a specific period of time before the scan. You will be positioned on a special table for scanning. You may need to remove certain clothing and metal jewelry that may interfere with the scan. During the scan, you will lie down while a low-dose x-ray machine scans your body.

Once the scan is complete, you will be able to get dressed again and will receive additional instructions if necessary. The results of the DEXA Scan will be available after a short processing period, and an NSP Clinic doctor or healthcare professional will review and discuss the results with you at a follow-up consultation.

Follow-up and recommendations: Depending on the scan results, you may be given specific recommendations on managing your bone health and body composition. This may include changes in diet, incorporating specific exercise, or considering additional medical treatments if necessary. Conclusion:

At NSP Clinic, the DEXA Scan is an essential tool in our mission to provide high-quality, patient-centered healthcare. Its ability to accurately and precisely assess bone health and body composition allows us to offer personalized and effective treatments that improve our patients' quality of life.

If you are interested in learning more about the DEXA Scan and how it can benefit you, please do not hesitate to contact us at NSP Clinic. We are here to help you on your journey to better health and well-being.

At NSP Clinic, we care deeply about the health and well-being of the community. One of the areas that is crucial to improve in Baja California Sur is road safety. In 2023, the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection reported an estimated 81 accidents per month, leaving an average of 2-3 accidents per day on the section of the Transpeninsular Highway.

Car accidents can have devastating consequences, both physically and emotionally, and are often avoidable. Therefore, we would like to invite everyone to read and share this information, in an effort to promote awareness about the importance of taking preventative measures while driving.

We will explain 6 ways we can reduce risks on the road and ensure a safer journey for everyone.

Respect the speed limits:

One of the most basic and effective measures to reduce the risk of accidents is to respect speed limits. Speed limits are designed taking into account several factors, such as road type, traffic conditions, and pedestrian safety. Exceeding these limits is not only illegal, but also significantly increases the risk of a collision and serious injury in the event of an accident.

Maintain a safe distance:

Another important measure is to maintain an adequate distance between our vehicle and the one in front. This gives us more time to react. The easiest way to maintain a safe following distance is to follow the 3-second rule.

When the vehicle in front of you passes a fixed object on the road, such as a sign or other landmark, it begins counting to three. If you pass the same point before reaching three, you are probably too close to the car in front of you and will need to slow down

Avoid distractions while driving

Distractions while driving, such as using a mobile phone, eating, drinking or adjusting music, are one of the main causes of traffic accidents today.

Use the seat belt

The seat belt is a basic safety element that can save lives in the event of an accident. However, surprisingly, there are still many people who do not use it properly or even use it at all. Wearing your seat belt correctly can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or even death in the event of an accident. Remember to ALWAYS use it regardless of the distance. If you are driving, make sure your companions use it too.

Be prepared for adverse conditions:

Finally, it is important to be prepared to face adverse road conditions, such as rain, snow, ice or fog. These conditions can significantly increase the risk of accidents, so reducing your speed is essential.

At NSP Clinic, we know that road safety is everyone's responsibility. Therefore, we would like to invite everyone to commit to being safe and responsible drivers at all times. Together, we can create a safer road environment and protect the health and well-being of all of Baja California Sur.

Join us in this important effort to promote road safety!

]]>

IDIAG M360 is a computer-aided medical device that can be used to determine the shape and mobility of the spine by simply sliding the device manually across the back.

From the surface shape, an intelligent recursive algorithm calculates information regarding the relative position of the vertebral bodies of the thoracic and lumbar spine, taking into account the local curvature (kyphotic or lordotic).

As a final result, a precise segmental location of all the vertebral bodies is obtained as the projection of their midpoints on the superficial contour of the back.

The Idiag M360 uses the large wheel to measure the length from the 7th cervical vertebra (C7) to the 3rd sacral vertebra (S3). It is an advanced electronic device designed to determine the shape and mobility of the sagittal and frontal back. Compared to other known methods, Idiag is unique in terms of precision, objectivity and presentation of the data obtained. Spine analysis is simple, fast and accurate. However, the most important advantage lies in the non-invasive and radiation-free procedure, which significantly increases ease for the patient and the user.

It is guided by hand along the patient's spine, with the sensor independently following the contour of the back. Using a reliable and scientifically proven calculation method, the following clinically relevant parameters are calculated:

● Posture and mobility in the sagittal and frontal plane

● Mobility and position of each vertebral segment

● Hypo and hypermobility

● Postural competence and postural insufficiency

● Pelvic position

● Back length

● Progression of scoliosis

The Idiag M360 data is characterized by its high validity and reliability. There is a wide range of possible applications for posture and mobility assessment. Thanks to its unique ability to collectively record criteria and therefore define physiological and disease-specific normative values, it is extremely valuable for scientific questions. The ergonomic and user-friendly design allows for good guidance along the spinal column. and guarantees reliable results. The data is transmitted to the PC via Bluetooth and evaluated by the supplied software.

In what aspects can the IDIAG M360 be used?

Based on expert interpretation of measured data, IDIAG M360 can

recommend exercise interventions for therapy and/or training program.

Difference between IDIAG M360 and other diagnostic methods

There are many reasons why and why the IDIAG M360 is different. Mainly, IDIAG M360 stands out for an accurate, simple, fast and cost-effective measurement procedure; Its evaluator-independent validity and reproducibility are very high; and does not use radiation or chemicals, allowing SpinalMouse to be free of contraindications or side effects.

Advantages of using IDIAG M360

A back patient can obtain quick, valid and reliable information about the shape and mobility of the spine in an easy-to-understand format. This leads to a much greater degree of patient cooperation, commitment and compliance with interventions, treatment or therapeutic regimens. Additionally, IDIAG M360 has the ability to compare a previous IDIAG M360 scan or series with a current one, and this allows useful quality control information to be obtained, while providing an accurate means of evaluating the effectiveness of any rehabilitation program or therapy by checking the progress of the individual patient.

Efficient progress tracking

You can process any number of exams with respect to each patient. During the process, these are vividly presented and changes are visible in the results table as well as graphical evaluations.

Automated exercise recommendations: From the results of the examination, the software generates a training program to address the anomalies that were discovered. The therapist can modify and adapt it individually as necessary.

The standard postures

Upright posture:

The distance between the feet is approximately hip height, the body weight is distributed evenly between both feet, the arms hang relaxed at the sides of the body and the horizontal view is in a straight line.

Push-up posture:

The upper part of the body is tilted forward and down as much as possible, the head and arms hang relaxed, the distance between the feet remains approximately hip-width apart.

Extension posture:

The patient crosses his arms over his chest, brings the trunk back as much as possible, there is no forward movement of the hips, the distance between the feet remains approximately at the height of the hips, and the knees are straight.

Matthiass test

A defined load triggers a change in upper body posture, which can be determined objectively using Idiag M360 recording. The evaluation of a possible postural weakness is based on the extent and location of the postural change from standing under a load, holding the arms raised for 30 seconds.

The appropriate additional weights are determined for each patient, the patient adopts the usual upright posture and takes the additional weights in his hands, the distance between the feet is approximately hip height, the patient raises his arms extended to the height of the shoulders (90°), the patient remains in this position until the end of the 2nd recording.

Indications

● Non-specific low back pain and pain diagnosed as “lumbalgia”

● Sacroiliac joint dysfunctions

Nonspecific low back pain is often caused by muscle weakness.

Contraindications

It should not be used in patients to whom one or more of the following conditions apply:

●Open wounds and tissue injuries in the area of the spine between C7 and S3.● Irritated, inflamed or infected areas of tissue in the area of the spine C7 and S3.

To determine the flexion or extension posture, it must be clarified in advance whether the patient can perform maximum forward or backward flexion for about one minute for health reasons. If pain occurs, the patient should not lean forward or backward.

The list is not exclusive, the decision as to whether a patient is suitable for treatment is at the discretion of the treating physician.

Side effects

Idiag has chosen the materials that come into contact with the patient with the utmost care. Only biocompatible materials are used, which have been extensively tested for use for medical purposes and are constantly monitored by manufacturers.

New patients, in particular, should be examined regularly for possible skin irritations and signs of allergic reactions. In such cases, treatment should not be continued under any circumstances.

Risk factor's

The decision as to whether a patient is suitable for treatment is at the discretion of the treating physician, who is solely responsible for the treatment. In each individual case, the doctor must suspect the possible risks and side effects of the treatment compared to the benefits it derives.

The individual patient situation plays such an important role with the overall risk assessment for certain patient groups.

●Serious accidents (whiplash) without prior consultation with a doctor

●Chondromalacia of the facets

●Acute hernia (spinal and abdominal)

●Neurological impairment (including spinal cord or cauda equina compression or nerve root compression)

●Severe balance disorders

●Spondylosis in the sacral area

Scientific findings

The validity, reliability and objectivity of the Idiag M360 were evaluated in several studies, including a comparison with functional X-ray imaging, considered the gold standard. A significant correlation could be demonstrated between functional X-ray images and Idiag M360 images of position (r=0.97) and mobility (r=0.82). Consequently, the use of Idiag M360 with an accuracy of ±1.96° is a good option and radiation-free alternative, saving time for the evaluation of posture, mobility and muscular stability of the spine. Likewise, the safety, validity and reliability of its application with respect to children was confirmed and its application was recommended.

The scientific compilation of specific standard values, by age and sex in healthy adults and children from 6 years of age, supports the interpretation of data and the recognition of disease patterns.

The Idiag M360 has already been documented in more than 50 scientific studies in various disease areas such as back pain, postmenopausal osteoporosis or Parkinson's.

What is TENS?

TENS is a form of therapy that uses low-frequency electrical currents to stimulate nerves and block pain signals from reaching the brain. It is a small device that generates electrical impulses intended to achieve analgesia.

How does TENS work?

When TENS is applied, the electrodes send small electrical currents through the skin, stimulating the underlying nerve fibers. These electrical currents can interfere with pain signals that travel along the nerves to the brain.

Benefits of TENS

Improves physical function: By reducing pain, TENS can help improve physical function and mobility, allowing patients to participate in daily activities with greater comfort.

Portability: Many TENS units are portable and can be used at home or on the go, giving patients the flexibility to receive treatment anytime, anywhere.

Characteristics:

1. Intended for analgesia

2. They usually have 2 exits

3. Intensity up to 50 mA

4. Burst, fixed frequency (FF) and modulation (M) working modes

5. Adjustable frequency between 1 to 50 or 200 Hz

6. Session time can be 15.20 to 30 minutes

7. Some teams offer the possibility of trains

8. Bursts are small bursts, which can be used by muscle vibration.

9. Electrodes are usually small and the same

10. The electrodes are placed on painful points or in the most appropriate way for analgesia.

11. The motor response should not be exceeded

12. TENS is intended to stimulate sensory nerve fibers

Who can benefit from TENS?

It may be beneficial for a variety of conditions that cause pain, including:

Back pain

Arthritis

Neuralgia

Sports injuries

Postoperative pain

Important considerations

TENS can be an effective tool for pain relief, it is important that it be used under the supervision of a trained health professional. Additionally, it may not be suitable for everyone, so it is important to speak with a doctor before starting any new treatment. If you have any questions or are interested in exploring TENS treatment options, please do not hesitate to contact us at Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic. We are here to help you live a more comfortable and pain-free life.

Where can I get this product?

Fortunately, you can get this product in our clinic where we have professionals who can help you explain how to use it and if you have any questions about TENS, reserve yours by calling the number (+52) 6242137915

Dr. Vanessa Riojas – First contact doctor

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a condition that affects blood vessels outside the heart and brain. It includes a variety of disorders that affect blood flow to the extremities, such as the legs and arms. In this blog, we will explain the various aspects of peripheral vascular disease, including its definition, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

What is peripheral vascular disease (PVD)?

Peripheral vascular disease refers to a group of disorders that affect blood vessels outside the heart and brain. It typically involves the narrowing or blockage of arteries or veins due to the buildup of fatty deposits, known as atherosclerosis. PVD can affect blood flow to the legs, arms, and other peripheral areas of the body.

Causes of peripheral vascular disease:

Several factors contribute to the development of peripheral vascular disease:

  1. Atherosclerosis: The most common cause, where plaque buildup narrows and blocks the arteries, reducing blood flow.
  2. Diabetes: High blood glucose levels can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of PVD.
  3. Smoking: Tobacco use is a major risk factor for PVD as it damages blood vessels.
  4. Hypertension: Uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to vascular damage.
  5. High cholesterol: High cholesterol levels can promote the formation of plaques in the arteries.
  6. Family history: A genetic predisposition may increase the likelihood of developing PVD.
  7. occupations that require a lot of time standing.

Symptoms of peripheral vascular disease:

Symptoms of peripheral vascular disease can vary depending on the location and severity of the obstruction. Common symptoms include:

  1. Pain or cramps in the legs, especially during physical activity (intermittent claudication).
  2. Numbness, itching, or weakness in the legs.
  3. Cold or pale extremities.
  4. Ulcers or wounds that do not heal.
  5. Changes in skin color or texture.
  6. Erectile dysfunction in men.
  7. leg edema

Diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease:

Diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease usually involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests, which may include:

  1. Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI): A simple test that compares blood pressure in the ankle and arm to evaluate blood flow.
  2. Doppler ultrasound: This test uses sound waves to create images of blood flow in the affected area.
  3. Angiography: Contrast dye is injected into the blood vessels, and x-rays are used to visualize blood flow.
  4. Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) or Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA): Advanced imaging techniques to evaluate blood vessels.

Treatment of peripheral vascular disease:

Treatment of peripheral vascular disease aims to control symptoms, slow disease progression, and reduce the risk of complications. Treatment options may include:

  1. Lifestyle modifications: Quit smoking, control diabetes, and adopt a heart-healthy diet.
  2. Medications: Prescribed to control blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and prevent blood clots.
  3. Exercise therapy: A structured exercise program to improve circulation and reduce symptoms.
  4. Endovascular procedures: Minimally invasive procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting, to open narrowed arteries.
  5. Surgery: In severe cases, bypass surgery may be necessary to redirect blood flow around clogged arteries.

Prevention:

Preventing PVD involves addressing risk factors and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Key preventative measures include:

  1. Smoking cessation.
  2. Annual review with laboratory studies to rule out: diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol or triglycerides.
  3. In diagnosed patients, adequate control of diabetes and high blood pressure.
  4. Maintaining a balanced diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol.
  5. Regular physical activity.
  6. Maintaining a healthy weight, decreasing body fat and increasing muscle.

Peripheral vascular disease is a common condition that can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life. Understanding its causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options is essential for both patients and healthcare professionals. By addressing risk factors and seeking timely medical care, people can effectively manage PVD and reduce the risk of complications, ultimately leading to better vascular health and quality of life.

Alzheimer's disease is a complex and devastating neurological disorder that affects millions of people around the world. As a neurologist, it is essential to provide a complete understanding of this condition, its pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment. In this guide, we will explain Alzheimer's disease in depth, discussing its definition, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, and possible treatment strategies.

  1. What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's disease, often simply called Alzheimer's, is a progressive, irreversible neurological disorder that primarily affects cognitive functions of the brain, such as memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia in older adults, accounting for approximately 60-80% of dementia cases.

Key Terms:

  • Dementia: A general term for a decline in cognitive ability severe enough to interfere with daily life.
  • Neurodegenerative: Refers to the progressive degeneration and death of nerve cells or neurons.
  1. Pathophysiology of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the accumulation of abnormal protein aggregates in the brain, causing damage and death of neurons. Two main proteins are involved in its pathogenesis:

  • Amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques: These are abnormal accumulations of proteins that accumulate between neurons, interrupting cell-to-cell communication and triggering inflammation.
  • Neurofibrillary eggs: They coil into twisted tangles inside neurons, damaging their internal transport systems and overall functioning.

Over time, the presence of these protein abnormalities leads to brain atrophy, especially in regions associated with memory and higher cognitive functions.

III. Risk factor's

Several risk factors have been associated with Alzheimer's disease, including:

    • 1.- Age: The risk of developing Alzheimer's increases with age, and most cases occur in people 65 years of age or older.
    • 2.- Family History: A family history of Alzheimer's may increase the risk, suggesting a genetic component.
    • 3.- Genetics: Specific genetic mutations, such as those of the APOE gene, are known to increase susceptibility.
    • 4.- Cardiovascular Health: Conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes can increase the risk.
    • 5.- Head Trauma: A history of significant brain injuries has been linked to an increased risk.
  1. Clinical Presentation

The clinical presentation of Alzheimer's disease generally progresses through three stages:

    • Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI): Patients may experience memory lapses and mild cognitive deficits, but can still perform everyday tasks.
    • Mild Alzheimer's Disease: Symptoms become more evident, including confusion, language difficulties, and problems carrying out tasks.
    • Severe Alzheimer's Disease: In this stage, people lose the ability to communicate, recognize loved ones, and perform basic self-care tasks.
  1. Diagnosis

Diagnosing Alzheimer's disease requires a thorough evaluation, which may include:

  • Medical History: Discuss the medical history of the patient and his or her family.
  • Physical and Neurological Examination: To rule out other causes of cognitive impairment.
  • Neuropsychological Evaluation: Evaluate cognitive functions such as memory, attention and problem solving.
  • Imaging: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans can be used to visualize changes in the brain, while positron emission tomography (PET) scans can help detect abnormal protein deposits.
  • Cerebrospinal Fluid Analysis: Evaluate the levels of Aβ and tau proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid.
  1. Treatment and Management

While there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, several strategies can help manage its symptoms:

Medications: Cholinesterase inhibitors (e.g., Donepezil) and NMDA receptor antagonists (e.g., Memantine) may be prescribed to improve cognitive function.

Non-Pharmacological Interventions: Include cognitive training, physical exercise and psychosocial support.

Clinical Trials: Participate in research studies that explore possible treatments.

Supportive Care: Provide assistance with daily activities and create a safe and supportive environment.

Understanding Alzheimer's disease is essential for both patients and healthcare professionals. Although there is currently no cure, continued research offers hope for future treatments. As a neurologist, staying informed about the latest advances in Alzheimer's research is essential to providing the best care and support to patients and their families affected by this challenging condition.

Why was The White Room born?

At Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic we are convinced that good health comes from mental, physical and spiritual balance, which is why we not only focus on treating the symptom or disease but also looking for the root of the problem, understanding the human being as a whole. For this reason we took on the task of looking for tools in our clinical practice to help our patients and all people in general who are looking for that balance to stay healthy in different areas of life.

In reality, The White Room is not only a space, but a concept where everything related to integrative medicine is put into practice from a holistic perspective focused on the person as a WHOLE. The White Room as a space is a place for anyone looking to feel good about themselves where you can find yoga sessions of different intensity, conscious breathing, Tai-chi, meditation, and health-related workshops such as stimulation for children, postural hygiene for patients with back pain, nutrition, among others.

The style of yoga that we incorporate is with certified, highly trained and experienced teachers, for the general population but there will also be classes that will be aimed at patients with movement problems, such as patients with Parkinson's or someone with previous surgery on some part of their body or some special condition that requires an approach from the yoga teacher.

Tai-chi is a Chinese martial art that, through movements, can stabilize energy meridians and achieve balance in our body. Conscious breathing is a type of meditation guided by a certified teacher with extensive experience, where participants can find states of introspection through breathing.

Meditation is something that is recommended to be practiced daily, as it takes us to the here and now, helps us relax and focus the mind, which is difficult today due to the hectic pace of life.

These different techniques mentioned above have scientific evidence that supports an increase in alpha and theta brain waves in people who practice them regularly. These brain waves are related to a greater state of relaxation, focus, less anxiety and depression, and greater pain tolerance.

At The White Room we want to provide you with all the tools to connect with your interior and learn to listen to yourself. Many people have never had that experience of connecting with their mind and the first time they do it is very transformative. Although diseases can have an organic component, that is, physical, many of them also affect our mood, that is, mental, which leads to an imbalance in our psyche, and there are techniques that if we relax our mind, our vagus nerve in conjunction with other treatments we will achieve well-being.

Another objective of NSP CLINIC in conjunction with The White Room is that it also seeks to provide a space for patients so they can meet to talk about their health problem. We will start with patients with back pain, who will be guided by a moderator. Talking is healing and we are sure here you will find another tool to heal by feeling identified with other people, and knowing that you are not alone in your fight. Healing is not linear, sometimes you can go very well, sometimes you can go back a step. and subsequently improve a lot, but for that we want to provide the tools that you can find in The White Room as well as in Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic so that the patient always feels accompanied.

Continuing with our ideology that we want to offer integrative medicine, our clinic has different specialists such as Adult Neurology, Pediatric Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Electrodiagnosis, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Pain Medicine, First Contact Medicine, Psychology and Nutrition, and Any patient who requires evaluation by more than one specialist is always treated together.

The White Room is not exclusive to Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic patients, The White Room is a space open to anyone who is looking to feel good about themselves.

Early stimulation, also known as timely stimulation, encompasses a set of educational techniques aimed at reaching the maximum potential in babies and children from 0 to 6 years old. These spaces encourage them to explore in safe and loving environments, participating in pleasant activities appropriate for their age and level of development. These workshops will seek to monitor and promote the child's development in five key areas: cognitive, motor, sensory, language and socio-affective. The interventions are adjusted to individual needs, respecting the different learning rhythms and using methods such as songs, games, massages, physical exercises, cognitive challenges and sensory stimulation to achieve specific objectives.

This workshop will be taught by the neuropsychologist Maru Izurieta, who has a master's degree in clinical neuropsychology from the Complutense University of Madrid and four different diplomas focused on neurodevelopment. His work experience and academic career offer a broader perspective on the different factors that are involved in healthy development. These practices, in addition to offering valuable quality time between the caregiver and the baby, also enhance the child's self-esteem and confidence to explore and build their own learning in a safe and pleasant way.

Numerous scientific research supports the short and long-term benefits of early stimulation, recognizing the importance of a stimulating environment in the early stages to achieve optimal neurodevelopment. Although genetic predisposition plays a crucial role, it is insufficient on its own; A stimulus-rich environment is required to integrate these capabilities effectively. Given its transitory nature, it is of fundamental importance to take advantage of sensitive periods, favorable moments to acquire specific skills.

The human brain, by exposing itself to various stimuli, forms the fundamental knowledge to understand and confront the internal and external aspects of the world of each person. Early childhood, with its high neuroplasticity, is considered the most crucial phase of development, since it is a period in which the brain is designed to learn. The knowledge consolidated in this period will influence the future acquisition of more complex functions necessary to face daily challenges. Without solid foundations, these capacities can be affected, generating complications in physical, emotional, academic, professional and social aspects.

We recognize that parents and family play a fundamental role as the first teachers in babies' lives, being crucial drivers in their knowledge of the world. Therefore, we seek to empower and inform parents about practices that promote healthy and complete parenting. The proposed techniques and strategies are supported by scientific evidence and are adapted to the individual needs of each family, thus ensuring the maximum possible benefit.

Our mood fluctuates throughout the day and during the days it can also vary depending on multiple factors, but there are conditions such as depression or anxiety that, due to an alteration of some neurotransmitters, people who suffer from these conditions usually feel sad, discouraged. or with fear.

Psychiatrist Dr. Drew Ramsey along with Dr. Laura LaChance decided to investigate and share a list of nutrients that help prevent and more quickly reverse depression, they called it “The Antidepressant Food Scale” or in Spanish “The Antidepressant Food Scale.” In this scale they shared the best foods rich in nutritional density that help in mental health, prevention and treatment of depression, this scale was shared in the “American Psychiatric Association”.

Of the 34 nutrients that are known to be essential for humans, 12 nutrients have been linked to prevent and help treat depressive disorders.

These 12 nutrients are Folic Acid, iron, long-chain fatty acids such as EPA and DHA, magnesium, potassium, selenium, thiamine, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C and zinc. The foods with the highest nutritional density are oysters and mussels, among other seafood such as octopus, crab and tuna, as well as some animal organs such as the liver, kidney, heart and vessel. The plant foods with the highest nutritional density are green leafy vegetables, lettuce, peppers and cruciferous vegetables.

Nutrition impacts mental health and mental illnesses through multiple mechanisms. Nutrients such as long-chain fatty acids such as omega 3, zinc, and magnesium promote BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor), which influences In neuroplasticity, food is also a modifiable factor in systemic inflammation, which has been described as the main cause of depression according to the hypothesis of neuroinflammation disorders. Finally, the emerging role of the gut microbiota as a possible regulator of mood, cognition and anxiety is just beginning to be discovered. Dietary fiber is a prebiotic; its consumption can alter the microbiota.

Curiously, many foods rich in nutrients according to the Antidepressant Food Scale are not commonly consumed as part of the Western Diet pattern, especially the United States population does not meet its recommended daily intake of vegetables. Another example of the poor diet that the American population usually has is that 55% of the population do not meet their Daily Dietary Recommendations for Vitamin A, another 75% do not meet the Folic Acid one and another 68% the Magnesium one.

Many of the foods with rich nutrient density are of animal origin, such as liver, heart, kidney. Nowadays, vegan diets are fashionable, but there are articles about the high incidence of depression in vegan people, whenever they decide to eat some type of special diet, it is important to approach a health professional to be guided and follow a diet consciously.

Whenever you have questions about a diet, go to a health professional, at Neuro Spine and Pain Clinic we have specialists who could help and guide you.

What is sensory food stimulation?

It is an approach that involves using the senses to explore and enjoy food. It focuses on the interaction of the senses, such as touch, taste, smell, sight and in some cases the sound of food.

What is the OBJETIVE?

Improve the experience of eating, especially in contexts where there are sensory difficulties.

Benefits

Children with eating difficulties: Those with sensory aversions and food selectivity can benefit greatly from this technique to expand their diet and improve their relationship with food.

Patients with eating disorders: In some cases, sensory stimulation may be part of therapy to help overcome food aversions or texture problems associated with disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.

People with conditions that affect their sensory abilities: Down syndrome or sensory disorders, may find sensory stimulation helpful in developing eating skills.

What's its purpose?

Diet expansion: Especially for children with eating disorders or selectivity to expand their range of accepted foods, allowing them to explore and try new textures, flavors and presentations.

Reduction of food aversion: For those with sensory sensitivities or problems accepting certain foods. Sensory stimulation can decrease aversion by modifying the sensory characteristics of foods.

Food Skills Development: It facilitates the development of fundamental eating skills, such as chewing, hand-mouth coordination, manipulation of utensils, and acceptance of different textures and flavors.

Improving the food experience: It seeks to make the experience of eating more pleasurable by stimulating the senses, which can be especially beneficial for people with autism spectrum disorders or other sensory problems.

Promotion of healthy eating: By making food more attractive and varied, you can encourage a more balanced diet and incorporate a greater diversity of nutritious foods.

Sensory food stimulation can be helpful for a wide range of people. From children with sensory disorders to adults with food sensitivities or difficulties relating to food.

Sensory food stimulation can include manipulating food to change its texture, combining different flavors, colors, smells, and attractive visual presentation. a more pleasant eating experience.

Supplementary feeding

Complementary feeding refers to the introduction of solid or semi-solid foods into the diet of a baby who, up to that point, has been fed exclusively with breast milk or formula. This transition usually begins around 6 months of age, although it can vary depending on the baby's development and medical recommendations.

Tips for complementary feeding:

Right moment: Most health organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recommend starting complementary feeding around 6 months of age, as long as the baby shows signs of being ready.

Signs of readiness: Some signs that a baby may be ready for complementary feeding include the ability to hold his head up and sit up without assistance, showing interest in foods other people are eating, and loss of the extrusion reflex (pushing food with the tongue). .

Food variety: Introduce a variety of nutrient-dense foods. Start with soft, easy-to-swallow foods, such as pureed fruits and vegetables. Then progress to more textured foods as baby gets used to eating.

Gradual introduction: Introduce one new food at a time and wait a few days before adding another. This makes it easier to identify possible food allergies or sensitivities.

Textures and shapes: As your baby gets used to eating, you can introduce more solid textures and shapes that allow them to practice chewing and motor coordination.

Offer family foods: As the baby develops, you can begin to offer foods that the family consumes, always taking into account the adaptation of texture and portion sizes.

Breastmilk or formula is still important: Although solid foods are introduced, breastmilk or formula remains an essential part of a baby's diet during the first year of life.

It is important to remember that each baby is unique and may have their own development rates. Additionally, it is advisable to consult with your pediatrician before starting complementary feeding to obtain specific guidance based on your baby's needs.

Prebiotics

According to the WHO, they are living organisms that, when administered in adequate quantities, confer health benefits. They are found naturally in some fermented foods, some are added to foods to turn them into “super foods,” and they are also available as dietary supplements.
Probiotics are found mainly in the digestive system, promoting the health of our intestinal microbiota.

Most current probiotics are of the lactobacilli or bifidobacteria type, and some other bacteria such as Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Escherichia, Lactococcus or Bacillus. There are also fungi such as Saccharomyces Boluardii. These are traditional probiotics and are considered safe by the FDA in the United States and the EFSA in Europe.

Traditional probiotics are recognized, among others, for the following functions:

1. Produce beneficial metabolites: Short chain fatty acids, bacteriocins, lincololeic acid, secondary bile acids.
2. Manufacture vitamin K and B vitamins.
3. Produce proteins such as IgA and some antimicrobials.
4. Reduce pathogenic toxins.
5. Increase the activity of intestinal cells and the integrity of the intestinal epithelium.
6. Regulate the immune system and improve the antioxidant system.

There are new classifications among probiotics, these are psychobiotics which are probiotics that regulate the gut-brain axis to achieve positive effects on mood, neuro-degenerative diseases and psychiatric pathologies, others are immunobiotics which are bacteria that promote function of mucosal T lymphocytes, which are probiotics that have a proven effect on the immune system. And the others are oncobiotics, which are probiotics that can have a beneficial effect in the prevention or treatment of cancer processes and others are pharmabiotics which are probiotics of human origin that have proven effects on human health in some pathology. specifically, such as the diabetes product containing Akkermansia.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics are non-digestible food products that stimulate the growth of bacteria already present in our microbiota. Prebiotics are mainly fiber but not all types of fiber are considered prebiotic, they have to resist gastric acidity, prove to be beneficial for some bacterial strains of the microbiota, and improve the system's immunity against the invasion of pathogens.
Some types of prebiotics are lactulose, fructooligosaccharides, and inulin.
Our current diet is usually low in fiber. Given this situation, many companies have launched prebiotics that are marketed and contain substances such as inulin, galactopyranosyl fructose, xanthan gum, beta-glucans, mucilage or psyllium.

Postbiotics

Postbiotics are substances produced by a probiotic or a substance that is released after the destruction of a bacteria which influences the physiological response of our body.
Our intestinal microbiota from prebiotics generates products such as short chain fatty acids (acetate, propionic acid and butyric acid), butyric acid is mainly the food of colonocytes which is a cell of the colon, and this butyric acid It has been seen to be beneficial in avoiding colon cancer and maintaining good intestinal health.

How can we maintain a good microbiota?

To keep our microbiota healthy, the main thing is to eat a balanced diet, very low in sugar, even if we can avoid it in our diet it is better for the microbiota, it is also recommended to be balanced between the amount of carbohydrates, fats and proteins that we consume, which None of the three macronutrients is in excess, consume plenty of fiber, exercise daily avoiding a sedentary lifestyle, and something super important is stress management, if we cannot control our stress even if we have a good diet and exercise, stress affects a lot. our microbiota.

Other important points are to avoid drug and alcohol consumption, strengthen our social relationships, learn to manage our time, have contact with nature and nowadays it is important to have digital disconnection.

It is believed that every disease begins in the intestine, therefore we must take great care of our intestines and everything we put into them.

The Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a brain functional test that allows us to detect the electrical activity of the cerebral cortex and, therefore, enables us to detect some anomalies in its functioning.

It consists of collecting, using surface electrodes (sensors), the electrical activity of the cerebral cortex.

The placement of electrodes on the scalp is done according to a system known as 10-20, so called because the electrodes are spaced between 10% and 20% of the total distance between recognizable points on the skull.

These key points, from which the measurements are made, are:

  • Nasion indentation between forehead and nose.
  • Inion; occipital protuberance.
  • preauricular point; in front of the tragus of each ear.

Currently, caps that have 19 electrodes incorporated can be used, and It is placed directly on the patient's head. The electrodes are joined in a connector and this, in turn, connects with the EEG head (place where the electrical activity of each electrode). From here the signal is sent to the amplifiers of the central EEG apparatus for transcription.

During the duration of the study the patient will only feel the presence of electrodes placed directly on the scalp, or in a special cap for the purpose of holding the electrode, but it is not painful at all.

Indications:

Epilepsy represents the main neurological disorder in which it is strictly necessary to order an EEG Brain tumors, or other masses that occupy intracranial space, can detected and targeted through the EEG, through careful study of several layouts obtained.

In head trauma, and in frequent meningoencephalic infections in children, the EEG is a good index of neuronal functioning, and serves to evaluate the treatment effectiveness and prognosis.

In summary, its greatest indication is in epilepsy; space-occupying injuries intracranial; brain injuries and infections and in some psychiatric syndromes Specific.

Contraindications:

Absolute: since it is a non-invasive test, there are no absolute contraindications for its realization.

We have this study in Neuro Spine & Pain Clinic, which is carried out by the Eng. Carlos Consejo and supervised by the Dr. Beatriz Montes de Oca. Upon obtaining the study, you are sent to a Neurophysiologistanesthesiologist which will analyze the study carried out by our team.

My name is Paola Fernández, I am 25 years old and I am an Undergraduate Internal Medicine Doctor, from the La salle university. During this year of internship, I had the opportunity to do a rotation with the Doctor Raúl Rincón, Neurosurgeon and spine surgeon, in his clinic Neuro Spine & Pain Clinic, for 2 weeks.

I decided to take the opportunity to do this rotation not only because of the importance for my academic knowledge about neurological pathologies, but because having previously known the doctor, I had had the opportunity to see his way of working with patients admitted to the hospital where I do the rest of my practices, H+ Hospital Los Cabos, where I perceived the treatment he had with patients, as well as his critical thinking and clinical analysis of the cases that arrived.

I remember the first times I came to see the doctor, visiting with all your team work and I remember feeling intrigued to meet them all since you could see from afar the excellent relationship they had as a team and with the patients and how all the patients were completely grateful to them and satisfied with the treatment given, because of this, my desire for wanting to know a little more about their way of working, was born.

Likewise, the specialty that he has, for me, is one of the most complicated specialties to understand, with greater knowledge and more delicacy. I remember that in medical school they were one of the subjects that cost me the most work, but that at the same time intrigued me the most, and seeing the doctor diagnosing, operating and treating these pathologies, for me it was very admirable.

Because of all this, I asked the doctor if he would give me the opportunity to rotate with him, which he accepted without hesitation. The first day I arrived at his clinic, he welcomed me and introduced me to his entire team, who welcomed me with open arms, gave me a small tour of the clinic and explained a little about their way of working, which I liked it a lot, I began to see that teamwork more closely, which is not very common to see.

Later I began to meet some of the patients and I could clearly notice the excellent relationship that Neuro Spine has with them, during my entire rotation there was not a single patient who did not thank the doctor and the team for all the work they did for them , which I loved, because it is a goal that I have as a future doctor, to be able to have a relationship like this with my patients and not only treat their pathology, but to get to know them as people, listen to their stories, support them in whatever way I can and take an interest in them, and make them feel safe in my hands, and honestly throughout my career, I have never seen any doctor achieve this, and at the Neuro Spine clinic I had the opportunity to witness this, and it served me a lot as motivation to be So.

Apart from the knowledge about neurological pathologies and more about spinal pathologies, which they hardly teach us in the degree, and which I was able to learn since the doctor answered all the doubts I had and explained to me with patience and detail, I learned a lot about the medical relationship. -patient and what teamwork is like, with all the staff, with other doctors from different specialties and with patients, something that they don't teach you in any career class, this is something that you only learn by living it and fortunately I had the opportunity to do it.

Another part of the rotation that I loved was going into surgeries with the doctor, I had never had the opportunity to be in spinal surgeries, let alone endoscopic ones, there are very few doctors who perform them, so it is difficult to have the opportunity to enter one of them, and fortunately I was able to attend some. They are impressive surgeries, with a minimal incision, which one would think is not possible, and I had the opportunity to assist the doctor as the first assistant, which is very valuable for my knowledge, since I felt really involved in them and part of, something that does not happen when one only sees the surgery from afar or when they teach it to you in the classrooms, and I learned a lot, the doctor during the surgeries explained to me what he was doing and what we were observing with the endoscope, and thus I managed to understand and integrate theoretical knowledge that I already had.

I remember a lot going to visit the doctor, with the patients of those surgeries, and how he explained to them what he did and everyone thanked him for changing their lives, and I remember a lot his responses to those comments, since he always told them that he didn't It had only been his work, but that of the entire team, and I liked that a lot, since few people recognize the work of others and do not take all the credit, and that is something very admirable, because not only does he take care of patients, but to their entire team. The first day talking about the devices they have in the clinic to perform different therapies, the doctor explained and showed me how they work, and because I have chronic pain in one hand, he gave me therapy with those devices and I was surprised. like the whole team cared and gave me advice to see other specialists who are part of the clinic team, to help me treat my pain, and it made me feel more part of, and feel that they care and I'm not just one more intern rotating with them, I also really liked that part.

In conclusion, I learned a lot in this rotation, both medical knowledge and knowledge about human treatment, the doctor-patient relationship, and teamwork. If any of my fellow interns ask me if I would recommend rotating with the doctor and at the Neuro Spine clinic, without hesitation I would say yes, since they taught me things that no one had taught me, I think it is a very valuable rotation and it is worth it. much worth it.

Dr. Walkiria Inzunza Romero

This diet today is very famous for its multiple benefits for cardiovascular health because it is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, and it has also been recognized as helping to prevent aging, hypertension, diabetes, cancer and other diseases associated with inflammation.

Although the concept “plant-based diet” varies widely in definition, there are concepts where it is defined as a diet that completely excludes animal products and there are also concepts that say it is a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, cereals, beans and includes fish. , chicken and yogurt (1). Some “plant-based” diets reduce or eliminate the consumption of highly refined foods such as white flour, sugar and oils. Other publications categorize plant-based diets as semi-vegetarian with a typical American diet with smaller portions or less frequency of animal products, others are classified as pescetarian with or without eggs or dairy, lacto-ovovegetarian with eggs and milk and another is vegan that does not include any animal products. What is known is that multiple studies have shown that plant-based diets, particularly the vegan diet, are associated with an improvement in cardiovascular events and reduce the risk of factors such as diabetes and hypertension. (1, 2)

The plant-based diet, in addition to reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, reduces dyslipidemia, which is the impact on blood cholesterol and triglyceride values. The specific components that predominate in the plant-based diet pattern are vegetable fats, vegetable fibers, and phytonutrients such as phytosterols. Plant-based patterns include the Mediterranean diet, the Nordic diet, the DASH diet which is designed to stop high blood pressure, the Portfolio diet, as well as the vegetarian and vegan diet. All of these diets have been seen to reduce cardiovascular risks, such as reducing LDL cholesterol levels, have benefits in dyslipidemia and help manage and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

There is great controversy about whether protein intake is sufficient in a plant-based diet, especially one that is vegan where they do not consume any products of animal origin, protein is a macronutrient responsible for multiple functions in the human body and is made of 20 amino acids. Nine amino acids are not synthesized in the human body and require dietary intake to prevent deficiency.

These essential amino acids are easily obtained through animal protein but are in limited quantity in plants.

High meat consumption is associated with saturated fat consumption and low fiber consumption, resulting in meat consumption being correlated with obesity, heart disease, metabolic syndrome and gastrointestinal cancer, but despite this, diets based In animals they contain high amounts of leucine and other essential amino acids that are associated with a potential anabolic increase and muscle synthesis. Despite this, multiple studies show conflicting results regarding the true benefit of animal-based diets and their relationship with protein intake and the preservation of muscle mass. There are other studies in favor of a plant-based diet because its benefits are greater. health benefit (3)

In conclusion, a plant-based diet, whether with or without animal protein, is the best option for health. This combined with exercise will help you lead a healthy lifestyle, if you are interested in advice on how to lead a healthier life or one come to us at Neuro Spine & Pain Clinic, we can help you.

When joint pain is NOT is by aging

Rheumatologist

Our body uses pain as a defense mechanism, simply telling us that something is wrong. Unfortunately, some types of pain can be difficult to diagnose and very complex to treat, ignoring pain or accepting it as part of daily life is not the best option.

Arthritis, especially, is often ignored or minimized thinking that it is only pain and discomfort secondary to aging, something that one has to live with as the years go by. NO ONE should suffer from persistent or disabling arthritis.

It is important to highlight that arthritis is a manifestation that can be present in more than 100 different diseases that affect the joints, connective tissue and can cause disability. It affects millions of people around the world.

Painful joints should not be ignored or taken as a normal part of aging, in fact 2/3 of individuals with arthritis are under 65 years of age. Statistics indicate that rheumatoid arthritis usually develops between the ages of 20 and 40.

Parents of young children should also be alert to any persistent, unexplained pain. Many children suffer from rheumatic diseases, the most common being juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Rheumatic diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Osteoarthritis, Lupus and Gout, just to name a few, occur when the immune system wrongly attacks the person's organs, tissues and joints, causing inflammation and damage.

In the joints, the result is an inflammatory process that leads to an increase in volume, a sensation of heat, a change in color in the region and pain that makes it impossible to carry out movements normally. Simple activities such as getting out of bed, buttoning your shirt, combing your hair, and even walking can become extremely painful or even impossible to perform.

Arthritis can be the manifestation of a systemic disease, this means that it not only affects the joints, it can also affect other parts such as the heart, lungs, eyes, kidney and nervous system. The long-term effects of these conditions can be devastating, early intervention and initial treatment by a rheumatologist helps manage pain and avoid disability.

Rheumatologists have specialized training in detecting and treating these complex diseases, they can make the patient improve dramatically and when arthritis is diagnosed in time, offer a good long-term prognosis.

Consult a rheumatologist In the first weeks or months of the onset of symptoms, it can open the range of possibilities to a more effective treatment and in this way there is also a greater opportunity to have adequate control of the disease.

I invite you to become aware of the aforementioned symptoms, listening to our body's alarms is not an easy task, but it is very important to stay healthy and active.

Dr. Walkiria Inzunza Romero

With this title many will wonder what my brain and the bacteria in my body have to do with it. intestine, but in reality there is a broad relationship, first we will talk about the microbiota, Inside our intestine there is a complex system full of bacteria that They perform immunity functions which protect us from infections by regulating Most of the time there is a balance between bacteria that are good for us and preventing bacteria that are bad for our body from colonizing us, fulfilling besides endocrine functions, and barrier functions where these good bacteria secrete substances that recreate a barrier that does not allow toxins to pass from the intestine to our bloodstream.

Our microbiota is made up of bacteria, fungi, viruses, yeasts and it is believed that even parasites, that everything together creates a balance.
But what does our intestine and our brain have to do with it if they are so far apart? from the other, our body is not managed separately, in reality everything is connected and Anything that happens to our body is going to affect us on a systematic level. Our brain is widely linked to our intestine, it has been shown in studies of image that when the brain receives intestinal stimuli, key regions can be activated of the brain that regulate emotions (1).

In a study carried out by Kim CS et Al (2) they studied a group of elderly people in who wanted to analyze whether supplementing with probiotics improved their cognitive function and their mood, they had a control group with a placebo and another to which they were given probiotics, finding that the group that was supplemented with probiotics decreased their inflammation, they had improvement in their mental flexibility and their stress level decreased.

The relationship between intestinal bacteria and the brain has been studied for years, there is a term that is coined for what is related to the substances that influence this, the psychobiotics, this is how probiotics that cause alterations in mood, anxiety and cognitive functions, currently these include not only the probiotics and prebiotics that influence the relationship between bacteria andbrain (3)

Prebiotics are specialized fibers that act like fertilizer, which stimulates the growth of good bacteria in our microbiota.

And now perhaps we will wonder how we can take care of our intestinal microbiota. To have good brain health and therefore a better mood, the key is to carry a balanced diet and taking care of our psyche, the consumption of prebiotics helps us can help, foods rich in prebiotics are green leafy vegetables, bananas, onion, garlic, soy and artichokes, there are also tablets with prebiotics that can benefit the gastrointestinal flora, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, reduce our consumption of red meat and saturated fats, practice meditation, having good sleeping habits and managing stress by practicing measures of relaxation, consume fermented foods and sometimes supplement with probiotics, always consulting your doctor because not all people need supplement with probiotics and it depends on the problems you want to combat.
strains that have to be supplemented.

If you are considering supplementing with probiotics or prebiotics, always consult your doctor. doctor to make sure you consume the right ones for you.

In addition to a headache, any of us can develop facial pain. We will understand facial pain as pain that is found in our face and the limbus of the face that connects with our cranial vault.

Some headaches can radiate or travel to the face and vice versa.

Face/face/facial pain may have a non-neurological origin, but by abusing the complex and interconnected neurological system of the head and neck, the pain can be severe.

It is important that as a patient, you are able to describe the symptoms to your doctor in detail because facial pain, as we mentioned before, can have several causes, and due to the complex neuronal connection existing in the head, its diagnosis can be confusing or complicated.

A common cause may be pure neuralgia. Nerve irritation or exaggerated excitation of the nerve due to overstimulation or previous infection, leaving the nerve sensitive, triggering constant pain impulses.

Another cause, although less common, may be compression by tumors, inflammatory tissue or abnormal vascular tissue.

One of the common causes in practice, although not frequently reported or recorded, is dental problems. These problems usually arise from all subspecialties of dentistry, including orthodontics (malocclusion problems), endodontics (cavities) or those related to diseased gums*. All facial pain must be completely protocolized, with a precise and sometimes thorough dental assessment. Sleep disorders such as bruxism can be a heraldic symptom of these diseases.

In some cases, jaw pain may be the only symptom. And although it has an atypical presentation, when this pain is related to exercise or stress, it can be the first symptoms of a heart attack.

“Allow your body to avoid discomfort (if it can), and if it feels it, say so” Mediations by Marcus Aurelius.

The future of medicine is vibrational; In fact, all healing takes place first as a vibrational shift and then we experience the results on a physical level. Like the foundation of sound healing or the resonant science of homeopathy, this breathing technique provides the ability to transform blocked energy patterns into higher vibrations of joy and wholeness on all levels of being.

When we integrate the thought patterns that separate us from our true self, we have a clear and direct experience of the beauty of life. Breathing openly, feeling and participating in life from conscious breathing allows life to be rich in meaning and purpose.

The technique is simply allowing the respiratory system to open and relax naturally without pausing, controlling or forcing the breath. The first step is to open the respiratory system as most people only get a limited amount of vital oxygen due to restricted breathing patterns. Once the breath is connected it flows freely effortlessly and gradually the areas of the breath that have been closed begin to open and vital oxygen and prana (life force energy) begin to restore body and mind to perfect health.

Benefits

Deeper sleep patterns, greater energy, relaxes the nervous system, invites emotional and mental clarity and awareness of the present moment, strengthens the Immune system, rejuvenates and cleanses the body while freeing and relaxing the mind. It is a wonderful tool to combat stress, anxiety, depression, unresolved emotions or simply for those who want to live a fuller life.
